I'd love to see it with the tinted neck/fretboard, covers, and the '57 pickguard! That tortie looks great on it, though.

Good bass, very light weight, and nice P bass tone, US made...for $699 new. If my wife wasn't prego with twins, and I didn't just buy a car, I'd of bought it. |

Fender's "hand stained" finish has a very thin satin clear lacquer topcoat over what appears to be stained bare wood with no undercoat.
The finish probably could made more glossy by using a good automotive polish like Mother's or Meguiar's. I did that on a Wine Red Highway One Jazz I used to have and it looked killer. The Highway Ones had a very flat, not satin, finish but must have had an undercoat filler because the wood "grain" was completely smooth unlike these hand stained ones. | do you plan on using a polish on your honey burst P?

I used to have a Wine Red Highway One Jazz that I disassembled and polished with a buffer and it looked great.

Also is the new headstock the same thickness as the original?

Not sure if it's the headstock that makes these basses more resonant than usual. I have a '82 Fullerton AV reissue that has an equally thick headstock and it isn't as resonant as the honeyburst one. I believe it's a combination of good body wood with the super-thin finish, which is just a light coat of satin lacquer over bare stained wood...no filler, no sealer, no undercoat.
I've been playing bass for 40 years and every time I play this thing I'm amazed at the bang for the buck at $699. I believe that sale price ends after January 31, though.

| | | | Not to thread hijack - but I LOVE my mahogany hand stained ash jazz from sweetwater - light, sooo resonant, and sharp.
One drawback--- the satin finish/wood is very very soft. I'm careful with this bass so I don't know how, but I got a couple of good dents that you can tell are from light pressure.
Is this a problem with this Honeyburst P? It might be that ash is softer?

It was a "scratch and dent" price, and it had a couple minor scratches and a small odd dent on the upper horn. It is still a great bass.
If you are ok with having a couple imperfections, it is a brilliant bass. (That neck ) See what GC can do for you.
Here's mine: NBD (Finally!) American Special Fender Precision

The first scratch/dent is always tough, but every one after that is added mojo.
