I had the Bass Mage johnk_10 work his Dark Arts on it and it went from being a really good bass to just amazing. Prob my favorite bass to date and I have a ton of them, including old fenders. You can read about it on his great site. In a nut shell:
1. Dimarzio Model J pu's- super dark and loud. Humbuckers essentially.
2. New Allparts neck, shaved to a 60's profile, rolled, bound and refinished nitro- with matching black headstock. (new correct 3/32" size dots too, John is nothing if not a detail man)
3. Gotoh resolite tuners (addressing the neck dive.)
4. Swapped out Fender pre for EMG preamp (much groovier. Less zizzy sounding.)
5. Painted the routes for shielding (addressing the noise issue.)
6. New tortoise pick guard (addressing my nerd issues.)
7. Recessed the switches and swapped out the knobs for Bakelite knobs
8. NOS çap from late sixties on the passive tone circuit.
9. Bassmute (I love those things!)
Thanks John!!!
(Fender, get your **** together and hire him as a paid consultant.) | Beautiful!
I was very happy with my Jag until now.
Thanks for giving me another GAS attack

| | | Well, I've been reading the thread and it seems they stoped giving numbers (and a damn) in 2009. With that in mind, I urge someone to pick up where they left.
And I hope I don't get anyone mad, but I'm taking an autoservice aproach and giving me a number:
#100
Feel free to debate it or continue from here

The main difference is that I removed the PUP selector and series / parallel switches on the lower horn and converted the V / T control layout to stacked V/T V/T. I found that while playing live I was constantly hitting the switches by accident, and more than a few switch combinations simply cuts all sound coming from the bass. This setup is much more playable, and to me the bass looks great too. I also threw Aguilar PUPs and preamp in there too for good measure. She's a beast!

P.S. Reynold, gorgeous Bass, do you have a photo/diagram of her guts? I'm thinking myself of some stacked action. I'm not getting rid of the switches, I will just turn them upside down, I have almost always both pichups on and the bass on series. But some parallel action would be coof if I had tone and volume on it (Maybe then I'll sell my J-Bass).

And oh yea: I want a number | Most basses are two piece bodies. The bummer here is aesthetic. That the split isn't in the middle. But a split like that will probably sound more like a one piece.

It appears they do this on purpose for some reason, perhaps believing there's some tonal benefit nobody else has heard of.
Or maybe it's just the ones I've seen, I dunno...but I've been watching this for a long time now.

Is it a tonal goal or is it even cheaper than making two even pieces?
