Well then, you don't really need to upgrade the preamp real quick. If passive is your thing, then consider what sounds do you like (modern or classic, hot pickups, series/paralell) that would give you a pretty good idea of what kind of pickups you need.
I play mostly alternative rock (We are kind of in the grunge-y side) so the stock hot pickups in series serve me well (although sometimes I'd like a bit more definition).
The things I DO recommend at first:
Strings! They make a world of difference.
Mechanics. The ones in the Jag are pretty good but lighter, better mechanics can improve your playing experience a lot.
I have a set of not so light mechanics, but they stay in tune no matter how you hit the strings!
