| I played a five string just like this the other day. A really nice player. How do you like the active/passive switch?

How do you like the active/passive switch? | The active / passive option was in fact what made me decide to go for this bass. My original intention was just to go to a music store and try a standard USA Jazz to compare maple / rosewood necks, see how much they weighed, that kind of thing. The store I went into were sold out of USA standard Jazz's, the only similar thing they had was the Deluxe, so I tried that instead. At first I really didn't care about the active / passive thing and fully expected to just ignore it, but plugged into a Markbass Jeff Berlin combo, that midrange control made the bass come to life. It really hits a sweet spot, and gives you the Jazz tone without the mid-scoop, if that's what you happen to be into (which I am in a big way). It really makes the bass very versatile. The passive tone is still there of course, and it sounds awesome, but that little switch coupled with the mid control made a world of difference to me.
Later that day I went into a few other stores and did side-by-side comparisons. First I compared USA Standard vs USA Deluxe. They both sounded great, but the Deluxe just had a few more tones to offer. Then I compared a couple of Deluxe's, I played a red one with the rosewood board, and a natural one with the maple neck. The maple felt a little better to me, but that bass was a lot heavier (maybe because it had an ash body, not sure), so I eventually decided to go for the alder body black / maple. I'll post a bunch of better photos of it later on today. |

It just played SO NICE! probably the best J I'd played in quite a while. That combo was really nice and the 4+1 headstock felt a little more balanced than my Anniversary Blueburst 5.
I think the Black with Maple/ black blocks would look hot with a maple pick guard!! I had one on my Black and Ebony MIJ fretless 4.

From 1989-1992, Fender made the American Jazz Bass with 22 frets. They also elongated the upper horn, giving it a somewhat, well, phallic look. Mine is a sunburst '92 with EMGs, picked up from Joe's Guitars in Wallingford, CT on 2/14/93. She's been a real Swiss Army bass, too.
I had no idea she was a rarity until I tried to replace the pickguard.
