On a rather tight budget of about $300
My 2 main prospects are a MIM jazz and a musicman sterling sub ray4
Any other suggestions are good though.
In terms of tone, playability, and value which would you chose?
And just saying "get the sub" isnt all that helpful without reasons or information backing it up.
I have a mim j lined up i could pickup for 250 so it would be the same price as the sub nearly just i would need to order it. |

I like the single pickup in the sterling for slap, I think it complements the style well. U also have more room to slap on the sterling as u don't have a neck pickup. This is my next bass I'm getting...and specifically for slap

I intend to pick up a Ray34 sometime soon

However, if its mainly for slap the Sub has that mm slap tone that u hear a lot. You can also get a good finger-style sound with the 2-band preamp you can achieve quite a few different tonal ranges.

If i had the money i would buy both... |

| | | | I have a MIM Fender Jazz and a Sterling SB14 and I would probably recommend the Sterling for what you're looking for. You have more room to work with without a neck pick up there. Even though I've been using my Jazz a lot more for what I've been playing (post-rock/punkish)

yet, they fall out of your budget and, given that I don't get how a Precision bass can physically be a stranger to any serious slappin' (except not bein' so midscooped), go for Fender Jazz...
The S.U.B. 4 is very very poor, it's no way a Sterling 14/34 and thinkin' about any resale option, your Fender would go losin' nearly nuthin' (and a much better bass if you happen to keepin' it)
Cheers,
Wallace

That being said, try to play them both, walk away and then go back and buy the one you can't live without! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
