fender jazz or sterling SUB?

I am in the market for a new bass as my newest project requires a fair amount of slapping and my P basses dont do that so well...

On a rather tight budget of about $300

My 2 main prospects are a MIM jazz and a musicman sterling sub ray4
Any other suggestions are good though.

In terms of tone, playability, and value which would you chose?

And just saying "get the sub" isnt all that helpful without reasons or information backing it up.

I have a mim j lined up i could pickup for 250 so it would be the same price as the sub nearly just i would need to order it.

I am in a similar situation as well. I have a jazz, but slapping on it wasn't doin for me. I like the single pickup in the sterling for slap, I think it complements the style well. U also have more room to slap on the sterling as u don't have a neck pickup. This is my next bass I'm getting...and specifically for slap

My main go-to bass is a Jazz, I use it for everything. That being said, you would probably be happier with the MM style bass to suit your needs.

I intend to pick up a Ray34 sometime soon

with your budget if it were me,hands down I'd get the sub best bang for the buck.it has the stingray feel & sound from the ones I've played the QC is surprisingly very good. but get what you want

You can't really go wrong either way. They're both great for slap. I personally prefer the Jazz neck. Can you try them both out?

I have a MM Sterling and a American standard jazz bass. Both have very comfortable necks, and both sound great for slapping. My personal preference is a more vintage slap tone, so 7 times out of 10, ill grab my jazz. But either way you can't go wrong!

I have both a jazz and ray35 either is suited very well for slapping. However, if its mainly for slap the Sub has that mm slap tone that u hear a lot. You can also get a good finger-style sound with the 2-band preamp you can achieve quite a few different tonal ranges.

This is a very difficult decision as i absolutely love everything about the Jazz and MM.

If i had the money i would buy both...

I have a MIM Fender Jazz and a Sterling SB14 and I would probably recommend the Sterling for what you're looking for. You have more room to work with without a neck pick up there. Even though I've been using my Jazz a lot more for what I've been playing (post-rock/punkish)

yet, they fall out of your budget and, given that I don't get how a Precision bass can physically be a stranger to any serious slappin' (except not bein' so midscooped), go for Fender Jazz...

The S.U.B. 4 is very very poor, it's no way a Sterling 14/34 and thinkin' about any resale option, your Fender would go losin' nearly nuthin' (and a much better bass if you happen to keepin' it)

Cheers,
Wallace

The Fender Jazz is going to be a much better quality bass. My Sub showed up with electrical issues....I have 3 Jazz Basses (Squier, MIM and a MIA Fender) and none of them have ever left me down.

That being said, try to play them both, walk away and then go back and buy the one you can't live without!
