Fender Lacquer vs. Road Worn
Anyone have experience with both? I did a quick search here but yielded nothing.
The specs are the same. Lacquer model comes with tweed case, though - at a lower price point...
Either way, I've seen so many raving reviews about the road worn and I'm trying to figure out what's going on with this new "Classic Series" Lacquer model.
I checked out a single lacquer P bass and it was quite nice, I liked it better than the poly version, but it didn't feel as... comfy? as the RoadWorn models I've checked out. The RWs have a feel about them that I've only experienced with actual used basses. Not to say the wear always looks right, but they certainly feel right.
.. my understanding is that the 60's Lacquer J is the original Classic Series 60's J with the nitro lacquer spray instead of the poly ... so it would not be comparable to the RW, just a nats whisker closer in the finish ... so those wanting the RW without the wear, arent really getting it .... just my understanding without having them side by side to A/B ...
Edit to add: ... I am assuming here, but I would bet that the 60's Lacquer is also going to have the CNC route hole under the p/g as the current model 60's J does ... which differs from the original Classic Series 60's J ...
I have played the lacquer classic 60's jazz and having played both RW and poly classic 60's (in stores, don't own either) the Lacquer model was definitely closer to the classic than RW, as expected.
I did a 2 minute test, so I can't say if there's any difference in the sound to the poly version, especially since there was no poly version available at the same time.
Roadworns somehow feel very comfortable to my hands (almost every single one I've tried) but still, when I recently bought myself a proper jazz, I went for the American Standard. It sincerely felt and sounded the best for me.
But, the RW felt VERY similar to a 3000€ Custom Shop 62 reissue I also tried, so I think it really nails that vintage vibe very well.
I am buying a bass this week and cant decided between these two. Does somebody know if the Lacquer bass are lighter than the standard? I have owned couple of RW and both were on the 8 pounds range.
I'm torn between these two at the moment as well. Would love to hear feedback from folks who have play time on both.
not really a roadworn lover, as nearly everybody in here know about me
Yet sure roadworn are lighter than Classic series and, yes, the
tone from lacquer is not far from former poly finished versions.
But I think I can get the difference in price between the two Classic options.
