Fender Modern Player Jazz V bass?
So recently I've been thinking about ordering a fender modern player jazz V bass simply due to its 1. within my price range 2. it has dual open humbuckers and 3 its a five string. My only dilemma is which colour? (white or 2 tone sunburst) and how good are they? i suppose in comparison to a MIM J or P bass as well as clarity. Or should i attempt to find another 5 string with dual humbuckers within my budget?($1000)
I played one yesterday and was impressed with the feel and fit of a $599 bass.
The pickups had a funny looking magnet configuration but they sound pretty good.
The rotary switch had 4 positions but there was no diagram to tell you what coils were engaged.
I was tempted to get one and upgrade to dual coil Nordstrand or Aero pickup with coil tap to go from a 60's to a 70's jazz bass sound.
Nice bass for under a grand!
The rotary coil positions are:
Neck humbucker & bridge humbucker
Neck humbucker & bridge singlecoil
Neck singlecoil & bridge humbucker
Neck singlecoil & bridge singlecoil
Each pickup has a dedicated volume, and there's a master tone knob. Lots of variety in these basses!
And don't forget, ZERO hum.
I played one in a store here and was very underwhelmed. Super heavy, and I wasn't really getting any good tones, or a whole lot of variety out of the different positions. Good shop that has stuff setup, and played through an Aguilar TH500 and 2x10.
It is heavy but I think that contributes to the sound I get from it. It's not an unbearable weight or anything.
I want one as a mod platform! You could put almost any kind of pickup in that thing with ease.
