Fender neck plate question

Sign in to disble this ad
Sorry if this has been covered already elsewhere (let me know which thread if you know so I can go looky); how important is it to use the rubber pad between the steel neck mounting plate and the body? What purpose does it serve? To spread the load more evenly on the body?

You don't need a rubber pad, I've never even seen an instrument that had one.

AFAIK, the idea is that the pad prevents the plate from damaging the finish.

It's purpose was to save the finish from the neck plate digging into it.
"Impotant" is up to you.

I don't use them.

I'd suspect it might be to protect the finish from the plate itself or something? Not sure though.

Fender used them for a while, they seem to protect the finish from scratches caused but the rougher underside of the neck plate edges and from cracking around the corners of the neck plate if the screws are tightened too tight...within limits.
