Fender Necks With Graphite Support Rods

Sign in to disble this ad
Quick question:

I have read that all USA Fender necks made from 1995 to present feature the graphite composite support rods.

Does this include the vintage reissues and reproductions like the '57 RI, etc.?

From my understanding, no. Anything "vintage" is made to vintage specs as much as possible.

I could be wrong, but I haven't seen where the new Specials have the graphite.

Is weight the only advantage of graphite rods?

As far as I can tell from the specs found on Fender's website only the American Standards and American Deluxe models have the graphite rods.

Editorial comment: While I have owned several Fenders without the rods that were trouble free, I have NEVER had an issue with the graphite rod equipped basses. I set them up when I buy them and forget them. I have never had to adjust the truss rod again even when changing to different gauges of strings, traveling, climate changes, you name it.

They are just wonderfully strong and stable.

no. they're used make the neck stiffer. (result: less chance of twist/warp issues and less dead spots)

the new Specials have the reinforcements

edit: I could swear I read that somewhere, but it's not listed on the specs, so I may be wrong.

This is my experience with my Am Stand. Jazz. I am now spoiled rotten, and in scoping out my next Precision, I really want the composite rod neck. Rolled edges are icing on the cake.

Has anyone had a chance to do a side-by-side comparison of the Fender composite rod neck versus the Warmoth version? If I can't find what I'm looking for from a Fender factory bass, I may be doing a build, and it would be nice to know how they compare.

I have a Warmoth asymetrical 5-string neck with the steel rods and it's a good neck. Very stable. Don't think I've touched the truss rod in the past two years and it's set up with pretty low action.

also something to remember. on fender's AV RI one piece maple necks, there's no (conventinal) way that you could install carbon rods, since they're installed in a channel before the fingerboard is glued in place. that's why many of the new maple necks have a capped maple fingerboard (like on the Roger Waters sig model).

Good point, the Warmoth steel support rod neck is very stable. I have a couple of those necks.

They are also a little heavy.

Warmoth just started producing a graphite-composite rod reinforced neck ala Fender's version.

I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to do a direct comparison between the two.
