Looks nice, price tag sez 99 bux. What the heck, I'll give it a whirl. Cosmetically, it's imperfect but not in an ugly sort of way. A little starter mojo I guess :P
Well, the neck is straight, no fret buzz, action is good and when I plug it in, very little hum. It's kinda funny because the Geddy Lee model I had years ago had the typical single coil hum when it wasn't at unity.
I plug it into a nice GK and to my surprise, we gots GROWL! Throaty, honest to goodness J-bass tone! Needless to say I'm all about how fast can I get this to the counter!
I had a little setback at this point as they still had one day left on the used gear "police hold" so I asked them to ship it to my local store when it's released. They did, and for no charge.
When I go to pick it up, i think "dude, you need a case" to which the dude I'm dealing with says "all our used/abandoned cases are on sale for 30 bucks today. You wanna look?". Well Heck ya I wanna look! Lo and behold, what do I find? An SKB Jazz case. Sweet! We open it up and PRESTO! A set of RotoSounds and a Levy padded leather strap are inside! Flippin' SuWHEEETT!!! And since the tax rates are different in Gilroy and Modesto, I got a dollar back too!
Total investment = rounded up to about 140$
Played it at a conference this weekend and found a little more hum so I took it home and shielded the cavities with Stu Mac copper tape and it is absolutely silent at this point.
Squire, you just might be my new go to...... |

But, really, how many musicians (especially non-professional hobbyist musicians, which VASTLY outnumber working pros) NEED a $1200 American Fender?
And, once you've had a good relationship with FMIC at the entry level, your tastes and technique form around that instrument, and when you DO get that urge to get a premium instrument, you're probably more inclined to stick with the brand you know.
But, one thing's for sure, we've NEVER had it better in terms of "bass bang for the buck" than today. |

The Squier came fully gig-worthy (save for needing a setup, but then again a $2000 bass needs a setup out of the store too), and that's a fantastic thing for the price. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
