Is Fender overrated?

I really need to upgrade from my squire j-bass and get something that I can be somewhat proud of owning. Everyone tells me to get a Fender, but I'm not quite sure I like Fender enough. Is it just me?

Buy what you like, not what others like.

Nope! For the price of a new Fender, you can buy a better made bass.

The word "overrated" is overrated.

I don't think they're overrated, but they're not the only worthy bass out there. So if they don't speak to you, get something that does.

Personally , I do think fenders are over rated, but that's personally , try a few out , and try others in the same price range, get the one YOU like playing best ( it is your money you are spending after all). Remember, you don't have to run out and get all the star wars toys if you don't like star wars , just because all the other kids on the playground do

Go out and try a bunch, buy the one that you like the most, don't let other people tell you what you should like. For the price of an MIM Fender there are many other brands more than worthy of looking into.

The only reason I ask is because I don't have a very good local music store. They sell very standard basses it seems so I'm not very versed

Pick up book on the history of the electric bass. Look at the headstock of the people in it. There lies your answer.

If you're not just trolling, what is it that you don't like about fenders, and what is it you're looking for in a better bass than your squier? If you answer that, people will better be able to help you. Otherwise you can get as many recommendations as there are people on talkbass

Hey is that a shiner bock in Darth Vader's hand? Reminds me of Austin. What a great town!
Fenders are ubiquitous but they get the job done. Most of them are made well enough but they are about the simplest design for an electric bass there is. I like Gibson but that's a whole other story.

the term "overrated" is irrelevant. Some people like one thing, some like another. If a fanboi tells you there's only one brand in the world, he's full of it regardless of the brand.

Play what YOU like. A good player can make just about any bass sound fantastic.

And even though I live in Fort Collins, Colorado, the "Napa Valley of Beer", I likes me some Shiner bock just fine!
