I like Jazz basses. I find them to be more versatile.

Laklands are great.

Why choose? P/J's Precisions rule!!

And Lakland? They are nice basses, if you don't mind spending silly money for a Fender clone. Or Fender MIA prices for a Skyline (import).

Now, for your viewing pleasure, here come the Lakland police...

Lāklands are awesome. They have sold-gold cores and are finished with diluted pixie dust. So dreamy.

Fender Js and Ps are so different that you'll need two of each: one with rounds in the finish of your choice, and one in the official TB-approved finish (sunburst with a tort guard). The TB-approved P will need flats, no matter what sort of music you're playing.

Get out your wallet.

Both basses are great and can be used in any type of music. Jazz basses tend to have a slight mid scoop, which is more suitable for music where there is a lot going on in the midrange(Jazz, Funk, Gospel, etc). But favoring the neck or bridge pickup will result in increased low/high mids which can be used for many other types of music. Precision basses have a huge lower midrange which allows it to sit well in nearly any situation. If you're in a band with distorted guitars and loud drums then the P bass will cut through much better than a jazz bass. Jazz basses are much more tonally versatile but you can get a lot of different tones from a P bass with different techniques, strings, and amps.

I suggest you try a bunch of basses and pick whichever one you like best.

Depends, you do want to play jazz, or play with precision?

Funny, I just ran across another import Fender "clone" that sells for Fender MIA prices.
What is YOUR favorite P style bass in production
