Fender P-Lyte/Jazz Special Question

Sign in to disble this ad
This one's for those who know-

I have an 86/7 Jazz Special, which is basically an MIJ P-Lyte except with a differently branded headstock (black body, maple neck, rosewood board, matching black headstock, gold hardware) and the only real difference is mine's a 32" scale.

Here's the question: I've been seeing a few P-Lyte and P-lyte deluxe models (maybe only the deluxe, I'm not very much up to speed on the difference, except the deluxe seemto have a fatter double J style pup in the bridge position and an extra knob) that are finished with a natural clear coat and are sold as having mahogany bodies.

I'm a big fan of mahogany, but I'm not convinced mine is one of them, and I'm considering stripping it. It's no classic, so that's no real knock to the resale if it's done well (and if it's got a nice grain), but if it's just your run of the mill Fender alder body I won't bother.

Does anyone know what's the deal with mahogany Fender Lytes/J-Specials? They're the same bass, P/J setup, 4 knobs (+1 for the deluxe), and this is NOT the Duff model you might be thinking of. I've got another thread on TB about the bass when I picked it up trying to figure out its heritage.

Thanks, and good luck, gumshoes!
