Fender precision 1979 I need HELP!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello I presenting to you all I´m cristian from Argentina. Sorry for my english is really bad I hope your understand
I bought a 1979 fender precision need to know if it is really original. I'm put here an album of photos to know this and I want to help me ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/55398353@N04/ )
pots numbers followed by the "137" are "78", under the neckplate seem to be original stamps, looks and smells original.
I think the pickguard is not original because I think most were black at that time... but if it is old
the case look like the year 78/79 I understand it is a transitional stage in the brand.
Please review the photos and all your comments are very important to me.
Best wishes to you all
Thanks
Cristian

I have a Precision from that era, and I can tell you that the pots and cap are true to that era bass.

The only part that does not look original is the pickguard. Original guards only had a small patch of aluminum foil for the pots and jack to ground-out on. That white guard has foil going all the way up past the pickup hole which is incorrect.

Everything else appears original.

Nice looking bass! The neck serial seems to indicate 1980 to 1981 according to this web site.

But you know mine is a 1977 (and I know because I bought it new) and this seems to indicate that it is a 1979. If they are in fact off by 2 years or so, yours would be spot on as a 1979.

Are you %100 sure? I had a '78 P-bass and the entire underside of the PG had foil. Of course, it's entirely possible that's not original.

it may not be the original pickguard, IMO, mostly because it's white, but it still could be. on many 1979-'83's the entire pickguard was shieled with one continuous pice of foil tape. i bought a whole stack of surplus ones directly from Fender (a bunch of them were lefthanded ones) in 1985 and all of them were completely covered with foil n the back.

Could be a later Fender replacement like you mention.
My '82 P has it's factory white guard, and is not completely covered in foil. It's like the older ones.

Its the real deal for sure. I read on the fender dating site that the S9 series numbers can cover 78-81. Mine is a S9 w/78' pot and pup codes so I call it a 78'?

I have seen Half foil and Full foil white guards from 81-82. By 82 pickup covers start going white also. Were you hiding under the covers reading ghost stories when you took those pics?
