Fender Precision 5 - instant old school vibe

I finally got the chance to get my hands on a Fender American Standard Precision 5 string bass. So far, I cannot put it down. Totally different sonic world from what I normally like. I usually go for much more modern sounding 5ers, but this bass has a certain warmth and organic quality to the tone that draws me in. Plus it makes you play differently. It's like hitting the reset button as a bassist when you play a p-bass, there's no where to hide on a p-bass. It really lets you hear your playing in it's most natural state I think. Nice to know Fender finally has a 5 string p-bass that nods so closely to the original.

The B string is actually quite good, not the best I have ever played, but pretty damn good. Great work Fender!

I just did a clip with this bass, please let me know what you think. The other instruments are from a sample library, I only did the bass part and the rough mixing. The P5 was recorded via the XLR output of a Markbass LMIII into an M-Audio 24/192 soundcard. The LMIII was run flat as a board, no filters either. Talk about plug and play.

Here's the clip:

This P5 has a black alder body with maple neck and fretboard. Strings are the stock Fenders, not sure of the guages or specific set. Not the best strings, but pretty good for nickles.

Cheers,
Paul

I finally played a p5 yesterday. I agree its a nice bass. I was surprised by the comfortable neck profile. I expected something like a baseball bat but it was slim from front to back. Classic tone, nice feel, nice burst finish. Honestly i would have bought it if i didnt have my L1000.

I have one and put a Nordstrand pickup in it. The stock PU was very noisy, the Nordy fixed it right up. The bass feels good and I just put Labella flats on it..

Great tone! And even better song and playing! It's not often that I actually hear stuff I really like on this forum, but you did it for me! bravo!

Great playing, I always look forward to your clips! Companies should hire you because you could crtainly help them sell basses.

I'm curious, does the bass exhibit any neck dive?

Thanks very much for the kind words guys. The P5 definitely has a fat tone that just sits in the pocket tone. I'm not sure I am loving the B string yet though. Could be the stock Fender strings are not working for me.

Just for kicks, I did the same track using a Peavey Cirrus 6, just to see how using a bass which is at the opposite end of the tone spectrum would sound for the same track. What bass tone works best for this particular track in your opinion?

For me the P5's fatness cannot be matched at all by the Cirrus 6, however the low note fundamental and clarity of the Cirrus 6 pulls slightly ahead of the more woolly sounding low notes on the P5. One bass though clearly has the right vibe for the track.

Here's the Cirrus 6 version:

Here's the Fender P5 version again:

Paul
