I bought an 08 and I really liked it. So much so that I dropped a P-Retro in it and now I can't put it down

That's what you get, pure and simple. I like mine, had it since 2008 and use it all the time, well made, great sounding bass.
FYI -- if you're feeling like something different, but with the same vibe, check out the new MTD CRB 5-string. I just bought one of these too and am really liking it.

Mine's also a 2008 (or maybe 2009. Fender's serial number page doesn't seem to cover anything that recent). It's my first Fender, and the one that cured me of 20-odd years of Fender-bashing. Some say that the high-mass bridge is a mistake and the finish is no good. I say that I've been gigging this bass pretty regularly and love the hell out of it.
Oh yeah: No battery = win.
EDIT: I'm speaking specifically of the American Standard, by the way. It's the only one I'm qualified to comment on.

I have a Lakland Skyline P5 that absolutely slays...but it's technically not a Fender.

I got one as soon as I could in 08, and I love it with La Bella Flats. I dropped a DiMarzio J in the bridge to give it a little more definition. I wish I had a gig that I could play it on at the moment, everything's a bit too modern for a P with flats |

I've been mostly playing my Fender Roscoe Beck 5 string, but I brought the Am Std P-Bass 5 string to rehearsal yesterday, and the band loved it! Like someone else in thread already mentioned, it does what a P-Bass does PLUS it's got the B string. The B string sounds solid, too.
The only negative I have to offer? The neck on mine shrank slightly and I had to bring it in for a fret dressing. Other than that, it's an awesome bass. |

I would love a 5 string P bass, but I'd really prefer the more narrow spacing of something like that. |

I will be doing an NBD thread on her in a few days. It is the first one I have ever heard of in her color.
