Fender Precision Look-a-Likes

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Folks,

I have always loved the look of a Fender P with a sunburst finish. However, I hate the tone I get out of a Fender Precision. What type of bass brands have the looks of a Fender P?

Why shop by looks?

It may be in your interest to shop with your ears as opposed to your eyes.

It's possible you just don't like the sound of P-basses.

Well once I would get a few brand names, I'd go searching the web for vids or recordings of that certian bass.

Thumbs up

My favorite-looking non-Fender P Bass is a Peavey Fury. The headstock is very cool, methinks.

Maybe a Fender P with different pickup and preamp?

Or.....Squire, Valenti, Sadowsky, Lakland

Couldn't he just buy a Warmoth Precision body with jazz pickup routes for a fraction of the cost of an Atkinson?

IMO, although every p bass is somewhat different sounding, a p bass, whether it's built by fender, another builder or you build it yourself using after market parts (from warmoth, allparts etc) will still sound pretty much like one p bass or another, unless you install active pickups and/or a preamp, or change the actual location or type of pickup. roundwound or flatwound strings can also make a big difference as to the resulting tone that you get.

I'd say go for a P with a preamp, or a PJ.

Just two (very good) suggestions.

perhaps an indicator of what exactly you don't like about a P tone is in order.

You could get a Sting Sig (Fender) which is available in sunburst, is a P, but has a single coil pup.

then there is the G&L l-1000 & 2000 and El Toro ( along with the SB-2) which share a common p-esque body shape but different pups / combinations

then there's the Carvin bolt-neck bass (not the SB4000) that is a P with 2 jazz coils.

And a million other variants, but I agree, shop with your ears then your eyes. Or at least a combination of both at the same time.

How about a Fender Jazz Bass?
