Does Fender make a retail bass that has a standard precision neck with a jazz body? If not, does the five string jazz neck feel "similar" to the four string precision neck?
I looked through this site and didn't find a similar question.
Thanks. |

I think there were a few that had P-type bodies with J-style necks-the Duff McKagan model comes to mind- but I dont know of any stock models done the way you're asking about.

| | | | I really like the Precision neck. Especially the really chunky 50's style C shape with the 1.75 nut and the nice, thick profile.
Unfortunately, it seems that the majority of players prefer the narrower Jazz neck, so when it comes to hybrids, you can find P-style bodies with J-style necks all day long, but the reverse is a rare bird, indeed.
As I understand it, Fender necks are interchangeable, so you could pretty easily put a P neck on a J body.

| | | | Nope. None. I'm guessing you've got larger hands or prefer the thickness of a P bass neck over the standard Jazz neck. Go the Warmoth route. They can do pretty much anything if you ask. Get what you're looking for for about the cost of a new Fender 5 or a P bass Special (which is definitely not what you are going for.) But built to your own desires. Good luck!

or as I saw in another thread - Warmoth makes that exact model - you just need to assemble |

| | Yeah, I've got the moves like Jagger. | | Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: G.R. MI | | | The Mark Hoppus Sig bass has a P-neck and a J-body. It also has a P PUP configuration instead of a J PUP configuration, so it's really more of a P bass with a J body.
I swapped out the neck on mine........

I've never seen one, and that'd be the perfect Jazz bass for me. Not that my hands are big, but because the neck on my '83 Fender VS '62 P is the perfect neck. Very thin front-to-back is the critical dimension, and a full 1.75" wide side-to-side at the nut.
And I've never seen anything like it from Fender, and I was a Fender dealer for 11 years.
John

I swapped out the neck on mine........ | This was going to be my helpful tip as well, although if you want a true J with a P neck, this obviously won't be what you are looking for. I for one am a big fan of P basses, but prefer J necks, and as this is something Fender does, I must not be alone. Perhaps a swap with someone might get you what you want.

As for a P neck on a J body with J pickups it has yet to be done, I think eventually it will happen, sound gardens bass player has this preference. |

I hear where your coming from.
I love P-necks, on a Jazz body.
Played a 1963 Jazz body, with a 1962 P-neck for 9 years.
If it had not got stolen, I still would be playing it.
To me, the extra neck mass give the bass a little more low thump.
Call a Nash Bass dealer.
Nash will put together a Jazz body with a P-neck.
Go with Lollar 60's pickups, and you will be happy. |

Or you could get the JB-2, which is two single coils in a non-offset P-like body with either of those necks. The JB has 20 frets, while the JB-2 has 21.
G&L's P-bass type necks used to have a really fat rear profile, but they might be slimmer these days. The five string necks have gone on a diet, and I think it's basically the same neck.

I don't know this for a fact, but I think most players prefer the J necks to the P necks and so P necks are often available for sale or trade (often for a J neck). Not only do I prefer the feel of the P necks, but I think you can often get more low end punch out of a J with a chunky P neck. |
