Fender qustion: Basswood or light Fender 70's Bass wood?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I bought a 75 P-bass from a reputable fellow TB'er. He only deals in legit vintage basses. I have a friend who is a fender guy and basically said the body of this bass was a squier and that it was made out of basswood. I told him I really didn't think so, and that although it feels light I'm not sure what wood it is. I know things at fender were weird in the 1970's and that inconsistencies show up a lot. Given these pictures can anyone identify the type of wood? If it is in fact basswood, did fender use basswood for basses in the 70's? I was going to ask the seller, but Its been awhile, and I love the thing and figured I'd ask more heads than one...especially the fender guys. I can post better pictures later if needed.

Thanks!

Looks Alder to me. The grain is not very basswood. I am confused about the electronics though, not very 70's at all. The routes for pickup wire route and the control cavity do not match prior to early 70s models. Where are the fender experts around here, I am using the power of Google which is less than powerful.

I'm not an expert in Squier or Fender, but it looks like alder to me also. I would have expected to see CTS pots and a switchcraft jack in a 70's Fender - those look like import jobs...

could be fine. is the neck dated 75 or the serial dating it to 75? its an early 70's long g intonation screw bridge. alder would make sense as well as it being light for that era.

your bass is fine. looks like a stripped/stained early 70's p. neck pocket contours, the guard, routing, bridge, all look legit. id say your fender guy needs to go do some research.

if you want further confirmation that your body is original, it should have plugged nail holes on the back of the body. one on the bottom of the body along the center line. the other should be by near the bass horn to the right of the center line.

Yes, check plug holes...neck pocket is kinda too blurry to say for sure, but it looks like a 70's pocket with paint stick traces. The Fullerton hump seems to be apparent on the lower cutaway, looks like alder. Can you do more and better photos, please?

The thumbrest holes look correct for a 75, don't think Squiers had them there (could be wrong on that). Hard to tell on the wood but most basswood doesn't have the grain pattern that you see on the arm rest area but it's possible. My guess would be real 75.

I'm going to try and get some better pictures up later, the neck is dated 76.
