Fender USA Jazz Passive vs Active

Sign in to disble this ad
so im looking to get a new fender jazz bass, itll be my first fender and i gotta say im really stoked. ive owned mainly warwicks and music mans in the past and always had a hard time getting the sound i wanted out of them. I realized that the sound i want all seems to come from fender jazz players so atlast, it is time.

How do you guys feel about this new american active jazz basses??? i played one in chuck levins through a standard genz benz shuttle 6.0 with eq set flat the other day and it was really rippen..serious growl! i dont usually like active basses in a mix and thats why im asking.

Its either that bass or the classic american passive jazz bass. WHich do u guys prefer for anything from a hard rock tone to a jazz/funk tone? how does the active bass take effects like fuzzes and modulations? what do u guys like specifically about each bass? i liek to be able to control my tone on the spot with my bass, the active preamp lets me do that but will my overall tone suffer??

Thanks!

Just got a new idea, if i get the passive bass, i can probably use a Sadowsky or Aguilar Preamp, how do you think that would work out?

With the 2010 American Deluxe J, you have a fantastic instrument (both passive and active).
The feel is great, weight is light, tone is excellent IMO
The active preamp doesn't change the basic character of the bass...

Of all the production intruments I've played, it's definitely up with the best.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. I like the current production American Jazz basses (I don't own one, just played them in stores). I think they play better than the basses they were building a few years back, and they sound better. The dead spots are less pronounced. Are they doing some kind of graphite reinforcement to get the dead spots under control?

Anyway, I think if you'd be further ahead with the passive bass and one of the outboard preamp pedals you listed than with the Fender onboard preamp.

i had a american deluxe and went to a american standard. The deluxe i miss alot more lately i think ill be aquiring another one soon enough. the standard rocks i recently strung it with ti jazz flatwounds, brought the bass back to life for me. Both do the jazz tone, but the passive is more classic sounding to my ears. Either one is a win win to me.
