Fender V

I've recently become interested in the Fender V, The one with the High C string. It seems like the only 5-string bass I would be willing to own. But how to obtain one?

Ebay,
also start by typing in Fender Bass V in your search engine. There will be some crap links, but, you just weed them out. those are pretty rare, most people that have them, keep them. A lot did not survive the 1970's. Good luck and happy hunting!

Edit: Here's one on the 'bay

Thx man. Trouble it just comes up with links to regular fender % string basses. If I cannot find one, I may just get a custom made one when I can afford it.

Just get a Fender V and put on a set of strings w/proper gauges to tune EADGC. There's nothing different about the bass itself, other than maybe the nut slots, AFAIK.

Or is this a trick question?

If not, I humbly suggest that you don't rob yourself of the joys a low B string can provide.

I hope you've got some change to spare on that one! Looks good enough, but I fear the price will go up in the next few days. Again, Good Luck! Quite an interesting piece to add to your collection!

Oh, you are asking about a specific model from the 1960s. Sorry, my mistake!

But I still say don't avoid the low B string! I love mine, I should have gotten one in the 70s!

Good luck. I've always been intrigued by these. Jamerson played around with one of these for a bit. Don't know if he played it on any records though.

I hear ya! that on looks very correct for it's age. A little rash to it, but the parts are all original. Definitely not one for "thrash and burn"

5 stringers

I had one of my Modulus 5er's set up with a high C (flats)

and my Azola EUB also sports a high C (ala Chubby Jackson).

I love it for reading big band charts---less shifting--can get all the way up to an Eb in half position.

I'm actually thinking of tuning the "C" to a "B" and having an almost contra-bass

You know it's a very short neck, right? Same 34" scale, but only 15 frets. The highest note is still Eb just like a P or a J. While it facilitates playing acrosss the neck, it's not an extended range bass.
