I got the 1996 japanese reissue here. Though I think it's quite ok, I read that the original versions are way better. Can somebody elaborate and for how much would a reissue go these days? There's not a single one on ebay at the moment to compare.

I would take this - "the original versions are way better" with a grain of salt.

I owned a '63 (dot markers) for about 15 years. It wasn't a very functional bass, IMO, but it worked great as a baritone guitar in the studio (tuned to A). Tuning stability issues were sort of built-in, though, and that's why I stopped using it live. If anything, I'd expect the new ones to be more usable.

You could try checking completed listings for an idea of the price.

IMO, the reissues fetch QUITE A BIT for a CIJ Fender. Then again, the asking prices of the original vintage ones are about 5-7x's that amount...

He I don't even find completed listings but I don't know a lot of selling boards besides ebay and... ehm...

About that "the original versions are way better": the PU quality is supposedly in another league. Then again, my main problem is the playability of the thick E string on the thin neck and that wouldn't change from reissue to vintage I guess. The Danos 6-string bass' necks feel somewhat better. I'm just thinking about switching.
