Fender's first P-J

Does anyone know when Fender first offered a P-J bass? If so, what did they call it?

thanks!

Here's a 'JV' P/J, I think it's an'83 or '84. Probably not the first, and not even real Fender, but I would bet the first P/J came from Japan.

and currently-

Those may not count because the P pickup is reversed.

With the huge advantage in tone you'd think Fender would've had the P and J pickup configuration long before. Who here hasn't tripped on the sound of the Jazz bridge pickup all the way on with just a dash of P pickup rolled forward? I think it's one of the better parts of life itself.

The pickup combo even looks better....

There was a fender released called PJ Bass, thats it. As stated above it was made before the Jazz Bass Specials, in 1983/4. Its identical to a jazz bass special but doesnt have a 3 way toggle. I think thats thee first and No the P pickup is not reversed.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but is it possible to have PJ with both volume knobs in one potentiometer, so that there are only 2 knobs (like P-Basses with only one pickup)?

Neither the PJ or the Jazz Bass Special are reversed.

Yes, It's possible with a stackpot setup. I've done this.

Do you want the 2 pups in series with one volum knob or do you want a stacked pot for the volumes controlled separately?

My first fender in 93' was a 92' precision plus (us made) aka boner bass. With lace sensor PJ pickups, volume, tone, three way p/u selector and some kind of boost button. A nice hi mass bridge with micro tuning screws, black with a white pickguard and maple fingerboard. I will never forget the new smell coming out of the case!

Yep. I just modded my P-Bass into a P/J (w/full active EMG compliment) and installed an EMG concentric Volume/Volume knob as well as a BTC.

The short-lived PJ, which as has been noted, evolved into the Jazz Bass Special. Predates the JP90 by about five years I believe.

The one with the reversed P coils was the Power JBS.

Awesome info. Thanks, everyone! I mistakenly thought they were making them earlier. Then I guess my next question would be, who was the first to modify a P Bass with a J pickup?

I have absolutely no idea why I need to know this, by the way.
