Regarding budget I have heard great things about the Squier J and might take a stab at it.
I am not in a rush so I will do a lot of window shopping until I find the gem!
As I mentioned, the Sterling has the same neck profile as a Jazz bass, where the Stingray is like a P-Bass. Me, I prefer the Jazz neck.....which is why I have the Sterling. P-Basses were never my thing!
If you like the Sterling, you'll like the Jazz. With the Squier fretless J's be careful with them, they can be real hit or miss. I bought a new one just to play around with, total piece of crap! The fretboard was so uneven the bass was not playable.
But there are allot of people who like them, so I must have gotten a real lemon.
Or you can step up to a Fender Standard Fretless (Mexican). You can find those pretty cheap on eBay.
