I'm basing this thread off another one just posted, asking which brand of bass is your favorite. I'm curious, from the viewpoint of a player, and a small volume builder, which string spacing at the bridge that most players prefer on their five string basses?
For me, I prefer the Fender V format: 18mm spacing.
Some have said that 19mm feels a little too wide. Others have written that for slapping, 19 is perfect. I also notice that some gospel players seem to lean in that direction as well.
Whats your preference, and which bass do you play (assuming it has your favorite string spacing @ the bridge) ? |

So 19mm for me!

EDIT: I have VERY short fingers.

I love the extremely tight narrow spacing. I guess my Fender Precision Deluxe 5'er has a 21mm string spacing which is probably why I don't play it very much. However, most of my 4 string basses that I have sport the 19mm.. So I guess I just overly confused myself

But for real I'm fine with 17.5 but that's only because I've had to adapt my technique to the bass I own. If I could have it my way, 19mm

I prefer relatively wide spacing at the nut also. I also prefer 24" scale, although, again, can play pretty much anything with no problem.
I can pretty much play anything (except maybe that 20mm Yamaha Patitucci 6 string ). |
