That's me.
Some folks want things a little narrower, because a 5 string with 4 string psacing feels to wide.
Which is fine; it's nice to have choices.

This is one reason I don't own a G&L or Music Man. | My G&L is 18mm at bridge

| | Hip No Ties | | Join Date: Apr 2004 Location: New York, NY | | I own Carvin LBs & Icons, which I believe are spaced @ 18mm; and I own Carvin Brombergs + a Carvin SB5000, which I believe are spaced @ 19mm.
Of the two spacings, I prefer the narrower 18mm, which I find to be noticeably more comfortable for the predominantly fingerstyle playing that I use. However, I've been pleasantly surprised to discover that I can get around just fine on the wider necks as well.
I do think that wider spacing "encourages" more aggressive playing techniques (i.e. slapping, etc.), simply because playing on a wider neck requires a more physical technique. For me at least...

(P.S. To mmbongo: It's not whether you were born with "manly" hands or "girly" hands that matters. It's what you can do with them that really counts.
I've seen guys with hands nearly the size of baseball gloves who were about as musically adept as an enraged gorilla. Thus isn't a sporting competition. It's supposed to be an art form. )

It is gorgeous....ash body.... maple neck....
Dillion makes some very nice basses...
but the string spacing is.....15.875

but slapping is a pain in the a** |

20mm is ideal for me. Very, very few builders have utilized this spacing on their builds. As to why they don't, I have no idea. As for Greg Curbow and his builds? He nailed it. |

However, had a Carvin 6 string with 16.5 spacing and just CAN'T do that, I learned how to play with it but its not best for comfort. Course I'm 6'5" too..

A tiny Ibanez neck with 16.5mm spacing are really uncomfortable for me, but a chunky Warwick or Spector with tight spacing is alright for me although I still like wide spacing with a thin neck profile most of all. Overall, 19mm is my favorite, but my Peavey TL-5 or a Fender with 18mm spacing feels like home.

I just sold an Alembic Orion Six for the same reason and bought an Ibanez GVB36 six-string with 14 mm spacing and am loving it. I never thought that I would like tighter spacing this much. It actually feels quite natural for me.
