19mm for me, even though I'm not much of a slapper. I probably would be comfortable down to 18mm.

Give me 19mm and I'm a happy man. 18mm isn't bad, just not my preference.

18.3mm on a Roscoe feels really nice and 19mm on a Sadowsky feels really nice. But anything tighter than 18mm is just too cramped for me.

Some folks want a 5 string that "feels like their 4 string."
That's me.

Some folks want things a little narrower, because a 5 string with 4 string psacing feels to wide.
Which is fine; it's nice to have choices.

I own Carvin LBs & Icons, which I believe are spaced @ 18mm; and I own Carvin Brombergs + a Carvin SB5000, which I believe are spaced @ 19mm.

Of the two spacings, I prefer the narrower 18mm, which I find to be noticeably more comfortable for the predominantly fingerstyle playing that I use. However, I've been pleasantly surprised to discover that I can get around just fine on the wider necks as well.

I do think that wider spacing "encourages" more aggressive playing techniques (i.e. slapping, etc.), simply because playing on a wider neck requires a more physical technique. For me at least...

MM

(P.S. To mmbongo: It's not whether you were born with "manly" hands or "girly" hands that matters. It's what you can do with them that really counts.

I've seen guys with hands nearly the size of baseball gloves who were about as musically adept as an enraged gorilla. Thus isn't a sporting competition. It's supposed to be an art form. )

I presently have a Dillion Geddy Lee copy in sunburts...as a 5 string...
It is gorgeous....ash body.... maple neck....
Dillion makes some very nice basses...

but the string spacing is.....15.875

but you know i have gotten use to it...
but slapping is a pain in the a**

I play a lot with a pick and prefer 18mm - 18.5mm. 19 always feels a bit too wide for me and I have huge hands.

20mm is ideal for me. Very, very few builders have utilized this spacing on their builds. As to why they don't, I have no idea. As for Greg Curbow and his builds? He nailed it.

19mm is ideal, but my BB 5er has 18mm spacing and it doesn't really matter, although I do find myself playing closer to the bridge. However, had a Carvin 6 string with 16.5 spacing and just CAN'T do that, I learned how to play with it but its not best for comfort. Course I'm 6'5" too..

I think that neck profile matters almost as much as string spacing. A tiny Ibanez neck with 16.5mm spacing are really uncomfortable for me, but a chunky Warwick or Spector with tight spacing is alright for me although I still like wide spacing with a thin neck profile most of all. Overall, 19mm is my favorite, but my Peavey TL-5 or a Fender with 18mm spacing feels like home.

I have 19mm, 18mm and 17.5mm. I've been playing the 19mm mostly lately, but my favourite would be 18mm, which I think is a good middle ground. Maybe 18.3mm, but I have never tried one with that spacing.

Don't have a preference. To me, other factors affect playability more than string spacing.

I found switching between the 19mm on my 4 string to 18mm on my 5'er was causing me some issues. I sold the 4 string and switched full time to my 5'ers and its 18mm for both my Dingwall Combustion and Yamaha TRB5II.

I have a F Bass BN5 and am feeling it is too wide for me. I just sold an Alembic Orion Six for the same reason and bought an Ibanez GVB36 six-string with 14 mm spacing and am loving it. I never thought that I would like tighter spacing this much. It actually feels quite natural for me.
