My 2 Ibanez 5 strings are spaced 15mm, IIRC. Roadstar II 855.

I learned to slap on this bass with no problem, also great for chording.

Funny, I tend to find that I'm more prone to cramping on 19mm or above, unless you were referring to cramped strings and not cramped hands......

I have fat sausage fingers, so I prefer wider spacing. I like 19mm on 4 and 5 strings, and 18mm on 6.

Another here for EBMM Stringray 5 (17mm?). Had two Warwick's and Lakland but the SR5 is most comfortable for me.

I have rather average sized hands, that said, 16.5mm for me.

Same here.
I had my Warmoth Deluxe5 fretless built for the Hipshot-A with 17.5mm spacing.
This required custom wound Nordstrand NP5 + BigSplit which are normally 19mm ctc.

Yeah Warmoth can pre-drill for a 17.5mm Hipshot, and a 19mm Hipshot....but not a 18mm Hipshot. 18mm is perfect for the Warmoth Deluxe V. Oh well.

I have no idea and don't much care. In my experience the playability of the neck has to do with the way a bunch of factors--radius, fret size, neck width, neck depth, string spacing-- come together. My current five string bass is a dingwall afterburner, I have no idea what the spacing is. I like it a lot and have been playing it for five years now.

Really, if it sounds good and feels comfortable I don't care what the string spacing is. The playability of a bass comes from the way all the different elements combine, not from any single factor. Thats been my experience.

Well stated and I hope people learn more about their tools to the extent that they want to. Better control over something starts with a better understanding of it, and it will lead someone being able to take more responsibility for their tools as well which can't be a bad thing.

The reason for the thread isn't to establish WHY a person should like or dislike based on string spacing alone. I play a Sadowsky which has 19mm but 18mm is my favorite spacing. I started the thread mainly because of the fact that I build basses mainly for a hobby, and I like to get other peoples viewpoint and preferences. And, I have a hope that Talkbass, as a community, will one day drive manufacturers and builders in directions that better suit the target public, bass players in general. And, I think we are already doing that.

well said. There are bridges that can adjust string spacing but they adjust little. So an adjustable bridge that can go from 16.5mm to 19mm would be great and I´m sure many players will apreciate it.

When I think of string spacing the main benefits or hindrances to me are primary to my right hand. I don't notice issues with the spacing as much with the left hand (neck hand), sorry to derail...

Interesting topic Doug...

I actually think threads like this do more harm than good. People go out an insist "i like 18 mm spacing" or "I like 19 mm spacing" and it's not the spacing per se that really matters, i'ts the overall feel of the neck. Besides the factors mentioned before, the depth of the neck carve, the radius, the fret size, there's also the ratio of the width of the nut to the spacing at the bridge. That's as important or more important than simple string spacing. But if I'm a bass maker I've now got to be constrained by some kind of arbitrary number, and the number may actually make my bass less playable, but everybody on talk bass demands, say, 18mm as the "optimum."

I've been playing bass a LONG time and have owned a LOT of basses, and I don't really find that I prefer one single thing. I like it to sound good and feel comfortable. I don't really say "wow this bass plays great, if only the string spacing was 18 mm instead of 19," or "if only it had small frets."
