Flea bass model 32 good?

Hey I have been playing for about a year and a half and I guess my Squier P-bass has served me fine up until now but I think I'm done with my beginner bass and want to get something new.

I have been reading about this Flea Bass and it's suppost to have a great sound to it for it's price. Most people say it's an intermidate level bass so I assume it should last me the next 2-4 years. I'm looking to head out to a music store sometime soon to test it out myself is just all the music stores are far far away from my house. Is this bass really as good as all the hype it's getting.

Please any advice is great.

All the advice you need. And I am not too sure about all the hype for these arpund here. This was one of those tpoics that inevitably became an ugly bass thread or a big fight over whether or not you like flea. I sense this happening again.

I have actually heard nothing but negative comments on the overall quality of those basses. If you do a search you should be able to see what I am talking about. I myself have never played one so I can't comment from personal experience.

That aside if I was going for a bass that gave me some Flea vibe I would go for the Sterling by Music Man. They get great reviews and are the same price as the Flea bass. I also heard that Music123 (I think that is the place) was doing price matches on these and selling them for $400 which is cheaper than the Flea bass.

Check this thread out.

Flea has been playing a Jazz bass recently, correct?

Just get yourself a good used Fender Jazz (the Mexico version). You can snag one for about $400 on eBay.

I hear that too about the short scale models but, still they are abit overpriced.

If you want a quality instrument look for something used. I think you'll thank me and yourself for it later. However if you really want one go ahead as long as I didn't buy it I don't really care but, you might.

This

I've been playing for 6 years and I own a SB14, I love the thing to pieces. Super versatile and such a fat musicman tone.

I've heard such mix reviews on the fleabass, such as the finish was terrible, sounded weak, etc. If you're really set on getting one, change the pickup at least. Here's a video of a dude playing a stock fleabass and one with EMG pickups:

I played a 32 and had no problems with it. I didn't really inspect it too closely, just messed around, had no intention of buying it.

I commend Flea for the attempt, but it seems it falls short of the intended quality/price point expected. Probably not entirely his fault, he's married to it by the time it comes out of production regardless of what Modulus promised. He's not a businessman, by the way, he's an entertainer.

That said, I'd go Sterling, better quality for your scratch.

If you like a bass that has a pick-guard held on by two-sided tape.

In this video I'm playing on a Flea touring bass
I plugged the bass directly to my sound card and used a bass plugin :

Not a bad sounding bass. A bit on the ugly side.
