Similar yet very different. While the Flea sounds cool in it's own right, it's not the famous Stingray that is instantly recognizeable. I love both basses, but if you want that Stingray tone, the Flea will not give it to you.

I would get the Flea simply because of the composite neck. SR's feel like I have an ironing board strapped to my chest.

actually, they'd perform equally as well in their own "fields", such as an sr being an sr and a flea being a flea and not so much in each others i.e. an sr trying to immitate a flea, and vice versa, so i suggest a/b'ing them in a store if possible.

Well, i guess that installing a status composite neck on the stingray would give you the best of both worlds...i guess

There is no bass that compares to a StingRay. None.

That being said, try them both and see which you prefer. It doesn't make sense to buy a bass based on what it looks like or what other people think. Buy one that fits your purposes and that you like the sound of.

That's what I thought ... until I tried it !

Instead of getting a Flea Bass tone, the graphite neck just took away some of the (already lacking ) "warmth and woodiness" of the StingRay and didn't fundamentally change the "voice". I ended up with a "brighter, clearer and thinner" sounding StingRay.

I think that the expression is "neither fish nor flesh" .

I know that a lot of people liked the way that this bass looked and had high expectations of it, sound-wise, but it just didn't work for me .

I don't see any over about 2500 US (which granted, is still more). I wonder if that is the old one with the Lane Poor pickups.

I prefer the flea. I find the preamp is alot more to my liking and the 40mm nut is that bit faster. Stingrays are awesome though...anyone who tells you otherwise is a dirty liar.

really you can't go wrong it's just preference

He plays a variety of stuff in the studio and the Modulus on tours. Legend has it that he went with Modulus because Ernie Ball wouldn't give him endorsement money for the Stingray. Sterling Ball's side of that saga is posted somewhere on the EB forums. I think that Flea's playing during the Stingray days versus the Modulus days is indicative of something there too.

I've owned both and I couldn't tell you which one I'd prefer. I'd really love to have both of them back. They are both great but aside from the shape they're apples and oranges IMO. Nothing is the same about them: different necks (thin graphite vs thicker maple), different bodies (the Modulus uses all alder all the time versus the MM's "selected hardwoods"), and different pickups (EBMM pole pieces vs Bartolini or Lane Poor blade style).

When I put a Nordstrand MM pickup into my Flea it didn't make it sound like a Stingray. Sometimes that disappointed me and sometimes I loved it. I got my Stingray after I'd sold the Flea and while I loved the tone, there were times when I missed the extra versatility and clarity that the Flea had. The Stingray taught me volumes about getting different tones out of my hands though.

It might be worth looking into some recent Dave Matthews Band albums. Stefan Lessard plays mostly Modulus Flea basses in the studio and live as of a few years ago.

And ... sorry meev992, I forgot about our agreement that I was going to stop taunting you by posting pics of this bass, until I saw your post .

Forgive me .
