Any time I see AJ playing I stand speechless. He fill in such an effortless yet authoritative way... A truly master. Probably the best out there.

AJ is one of my favorite bassists, and when I saw him live two times with his latest bass he sounded great.

But on recordings, I don't like his newer sound that much - don't know whether that's because of his bass or recording chain or whatever. It's even more unique and obviously closer to AJ's vision, but I feel it tends to get lost sometimes. I prefer the sound he got on "The Suitcase", "Caribe" (= live with the Michel Camilo Big Band) and the Lee Ritenour Cononut DVD.

Just checked my bass which was made to his specs and the ramp has a radius.. i would assume his is the same in order to keep fairly even distance between the stings and the ramp.
Of course Jason is final word on that.
cheers

The VAST majority of the ramps that we make (including Janek's) are radiussed.

And they are on with 2-sided tape, correct? So removal would just be pulling up or is there another trick (dental floss?)?

Neither -- Imperial or Emp II all the way!

Naw, I don't dig the look of those. The Imperial MG shape has grown on me. I like the more compact body and it seems like the imp/mg has a little better access to the high frets (more cutaway) but maybe that varies from body to body.

and it depends on how many frets you have - they can cut you the cutaway to your needs (I would prefer look of the Imperial cutaway any time over the MG one ) and they can also build you the Imperial with a more compact size (I know you know that all - but I wrote it just to remind you )

I love the access to the higher register on my MG. Plus it looks like something picasso would've dreamt up- such an amazing shape!

Speaking of my MG, I just did a little recording with a nice Play along from Patitucci's online school, including a solo. I really like the sound for straight ahead jazz! I was thinking of those AJ clips that were on the thread when I did this. I am feeling like I've really found the sound I've been looking for.

You can hear it here:

LOL.

In my case, I feel like I am 13 again and have a bass on consignment that I am paying off with paper route $$$.

In my case, the bass is a Emperor Standard 5 that is due to be in my hands in January... And instead of a paper route, I am downsizing a bass/cab/amp here and there and using the proceeds to pay for the E5S. My Christmas gift to myself is paying this off by Christmas!

Well, I already cleared out the backup Monarch and my Deep 5 so I'm running lean. I did just spring for a deposit on a new cabinet as I have a sound in my head that I want to achieve live but it isn't there yet. If that works out other stuff will be for sale.

The challenge is that there are things that I really like about the Monarch shape, and things I really like about the MG shape. Jason and I went over most of the variables and I thought I had figured it out but while this weekend's gigs ironed out one aspect it put another back into play.

fwiw I like the lower horn on the MG/AJ as opposed to the other body styles (concave vs convex). But I do like having an upper horn to grab onto when carrying the bass on-stage, etc. Stupid little things like that keep me up at night.

Tod, it sounds like you've got it figured out, monarch body with the MG lower horn.

My dream bass (besides my MG5). That was what my Monarch was intended to be. Cool bass.
