Not unless you flip it 3 weeks after purchase and return to these pages to brag "Those Fodera basses are all hype! I bought myself a Squire instead and saved a tonne of money and it's the business" LoL.

Enter the gateway..

Nostatic, I love the look of the MGS with the ramp removed!

Ok, so I'm a little freaked out by the talk of 33" scale not having the tone of a 34". I'm sure there's a little difference, but it sounds like there's more of a difference than I expected. I don't play a lot of jazz, as most folks here seem to(I'm assuming, and we know what that stands for) I am, however, the best jazz soloist in my corner of the living room
I'm more of a blues/rock jam band player. While my choice of tone woods is still in the air, I was fairly sure about the scale length(33") I want. I, like some others here, have smaller hands. I'd like to be able to play 6th's and 9th's below the 7th fret without having to slightly pivot, which wreaks havoc on my left elbow(and has caused me to have tendonitis for the last few years). But I don't want to have the tone or ability to cut through the mix suffer. Here's the basic spec's I have so far:

Monarch
33" scale
Mahogany body
Maple neck(bolt-on)
Ebony board
Duals Coils
5 string B-G

I'm sure I'll speak to Jason more about this when it comes time to lock in my production start(June-July), but is anyone else in or been in the same boat, or have any advice? Should I be overly concerned, or just find an amp that goes to 11.

I think a 33" B may have some issues - depends on your tone goals and your technique. The bolt-on will help get punch into things though. The 33" scale has no problem punching through a mix. It just has less of a "piano" tone than longer scale lengths. Same with 34" vs 35", 35" vs 36". The up-side is that your G-string will sound a bit more round/fat. If you have smaller hands, the 33" scale makes a difference, and chording is easier.

+1 all around.

I loved how quick my 33" scale basses played and how easy chording was. The inch really does make a significant difference.

For me, the decision came down to a preference for that slightly more Piano-like tone, using a low B more often than a high C and trying to keep consistency in scale lengths amongst all of my instruments(34").

I only really use the low B for playing notes below E..I don't tend to play above the 5th fret often on my B string now, unless I'm playing occasional passing tones or adding the root note to a 13th. That's also the reason I'm wary about the extended B. I can guess that I would be advised by Jason to get that option; it seems though that with the extended B, the E and A string get cut a bit shorter than with a 2+3 headstock and that's where a lot of my playing will happen.
I play finger style mostly, with lots of left hand muting. I never got(or practiced, really) palm muting. John Entwhistle was a big influence on me, but after years of banging the crap out of the strings, I've developed a lighter touch with good punch. 33" would mainly be for comfort. I enjoy playing fast licks, but I'm more worried about note choices than speed

In! (and out again, since this very Fodera was stolen from me a couple of years ago...)

Cheers,

Such a great pic...really captures a moment. But so sad and unfortunate that someone would steal something like that from you. I'm actually in the process of finding a nice back up bass so I don't have to drag the Emperor 5 to sketchier gigging situations.

I hope you've replaced it fittingly or that you will be able to someday in the future.

Grady

I'm not having mix cut issues with the 33" MGS, but I'm playing it tenor in a 3pc with another bassist. The tone on my 34" imperial is superior for standard bass playing IMO. I had a recording of a comparison, but I deleted it, sorry.

Lets ask the Jason & the Pontif about this too: Mike, Jason in your experience, is the difference between the tones of 33 & 34" basses about 3% or is there some kind of non linear relationship? I can't tell on my end because the woods on my two basses are so different.

Thanks.

Thanks, Grady! It happened in 1996, so quite a few years ago, and the initial shock was huge. Fortunately, that wore off, but I still have a bittersweet feeling whenever I visit this thread (and its predecessors).

Cheers,

Greetings From Indonesia

Hi guys.... For a small developing country in Asia, I'm quite surprised about the number of Fodera Basses and owners we got here....

Here's just A FEW of them, I'll post more pics, once I can get all of them to come together and snap some photos

The second Emperor from the left is mine, the Monarch in the middle is TBer Widjajar's and the rest belongs to TBer AfforB which is a die hard Fodera fan (Yep, all 5 of them and he has 2 coming soon), there's about another dozen Foderas here, and a few coming next year.

So, we're in!!!
