It's funny how my ears will sometimes go through periods of flux on what I think sounds "right". You'd think by this time I'd learn, then again, I always refer to myself as a work in progress. Kinda like CA freeways...

I had this experience with single-coils (and jazz basses). After exclusively playing them for years, I ventured out and for a few years experimented with stingrays, p-basses, yamahas, bongos, and others. Eventually I picked up a j-bass and was floored by the clarity and punch of single coils. Now I almost always use my E5S in single-coil mode
A little perspective can go a long way. Do you think you'll be locking ebony in for both models? |

If I want the ash/maple thing, I've got my Lull J-bass. But for most things I keep coming back to the YYD tone and the walnut/ebony is a big part of it. So all 3 of my Foderas will be chambered walnut body with ebony fingerboards. The Lull and Rob Allen cover other basses so I should be set. Or "final"

Top woods have been settled for awhile - flame walnut for the fretless and Brazilian rosewood for the fretted. My production slot is coming up so now is the time to nail everything down. We did a few adjustments a few months back, beyond that it has just been the fretboard on the fretted.
I'm done now. I swear. Well, unless I think I'll have a job next year and decide I need another one

Noticed a significant tonal impact?
I considered it but opted for a lighter variety of walnut to control the weight. Still curious about it though. |

Still curious about it though. | Hard to say as I didn't have other Foderas in the house that were identical (different woods and/or pups). I think there is a bit of air to the note and maybe a hair less compression. I love my RA tone which is also chambered, though I never did like any of the Sadowsky NYCs I played/owned (which are chambered). I think the combination of chambering with dovetail or neck through is a subtle difference.

Maybe it's tough for me because it's the first time I'll be ordering a custom instrument. One thing's for certain, all this talk of Brazilian Rosewood has got me sold. Also, I need to visit Rio... |

I know what your going through when choosing options...it can be extremely difficult, more stressful than anything...by chance was there ever talk about going with Brazilian RW on your fretted?..to match the body sonically?...maybe too dark?..ive always found the ebony great yet, great attack yet less compression, I like the RW's for more openness??
When choosing mine, i was trying achieve some tonal goals(as you), when Im building my basses it was always to get that sonic depth(full spectrum)...I always found that through all my gear ... i could always produce, mids, highs etc...but i really couldnt get the depth thang...until i started ordering custom basses specially chambered.
I have a custom FBass AC6 in production now.
Good luck ...either way...you wont go wrong!!

I have one Strat and one Les Paul with Brazilian, and the Brazilian board that Jason picked for my upcoming bass is beyond stunning! I love it!
