I'm using the new Schroeder Punch Line cabs (5 cabs in custom camo finish) and they're the best cabs I've tried, the Bergantinos and Aguilars are in the garage collecting dust.... I love the sound of the Aguilar DB751 but I use a Streamliner 900 or Shuttle 9.2 most of the time, I wish the Aguilar was a little lighter
The cabs match my Imperial! | I use either an Acoustic Image Clarus II Series 4 with or without my Michael Pope Designs Mitre Box pre or my Kustom KXB500 (class D secret weapon) in my Glasstone 2-12 Lil G cab. Cab w/built-in dolly is around 35 lb. Loaded with a pair of Faital Pro PR300 Neo 12's so it's an overacheiver to say the least. This is the only cab I use for any gigs, large or small. The AJ sounded massive through it.
I used my Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 on this gig. I've also used a Walter Woods amber light that belongs to a buddy of mine, Preach. No complaints. |

I am not sure if the guys at Fodera put any special effort in to #100 but the top wood is absolutely STUNNING! Gotta help my wife with the turkey before I can plug in and play a bit. Fair trade off for her allowing me to get this baby!
Pics to follow........

| | | | My take on alder vs. ash...
Alder seems to have a more even response over the frequency spectrum than Ash, which to me often sounds honky(for lack of a 'better' word) in the mids.
Hard to say though as there are so many elements influencing the tone of any instrument.

Q. Where do you get those string dampeners from and are they better than using fat hair ties?

I was wondering, out of the Fodera range, which bass would have the more agressive (growl) sound that would suit Rock/metal?
I know people will say it's in your fingers and how you play blah blah, but basses do have different sounds regardless of how you play.
I know Foderas aren't 'normally' (although I'm quite sure they are by some people) involved in this style of music, but I'm sure they would be awesome.
Any suggestions, recommendations?

Any suggestions, recommendations? | If I would like to play in a Rock/Metal band with my Fodera I would go with sth. like that :
Walnut Body (punchy & growly) or an Ash body
I would go without a top wood - maybe even better with a pickguard
A Bolt-On maple neck (for the attack, also great when playing with the pick)
Rosewood fretboard (adding some warmth)
Dual Coils with exposed magnets (but I'm sure Singlecoils would sound great too)

I took my 5string Emperor to a rehearsal a few months ago (and played it through a crappy Marshall 4 x10 bass combo, because my back-line was at another location) and to me the difference in sound and feel was dramatic (in a good way) but I knew it would take some sessions before it would be accepted.
The initial response from the guitarist was first a look of puzzlement i.e where's my familiar low-end and why replace it with that fancy looking piece of furniture, then after a couple numbers he asked " Is that a second or a back-up" to which I replied "Niether!" Don't get me wrong, he's a great guy and guitarist but he wasn't comfortable with the change in sound. Next up was my new Imperial/MG6, that was introduced a few weeks ago which elicited a more positive response, the guitarist opened by commenting on how beautiful the scooped heel of the neck looked and how clean the sound was and the drummer said he heard every note clearly (the rig used was Genz Benz Shuttle 9.2 into a Klark Teknik 510 comp/limiter/exp & Epifani 2x12 with the new drivers). Come the second or third rehearsal I noticed that the guitarists levels had increased and in a small room approx (18x10 feet) that's a big increase.
In my opinion it's just an initial reaction to something unfamiliar and he exhibits his indifference by playing louder. This I find quite amusing as I know, given time, he'll become attuned to the difference in quality of low-end, but it did reaffirm my opinion that bass players are far more adept to change and will accommodate variances in their tone for the sake of producing a more cohesive sound, unlike a lot of guitarists/shredders who think their tone is sacrosanct and get pretty stuffy about the silliest things.
The above is a sample of what I've encountered so far and I'm sure the multitude of Metalers I'll meet at gigs will let me know that the Zon sounded much better, but ultimately it's all about individual taste and your never going to please em all...
Basses:
Emperor 5 deluxe, 34" - Alder body - Chestnut top- Maple neck - Ebony board
Imperial/MG6, 33" - Walnut body - Alder tone block - Claro Walnut top - Maple neck - Ebony board

I don't play very raunchy metal, but I do play in one band that does Stone Tempe Pilots, Pearl Jam, Metallica and other "heavy rock bands". I ordered an Emperor 5 Standard recently and one of the reasons was that the specs would likely fit with heavier music..... Ash/maple body, pao ferro FB, dual coils, bolt on, etc.
It won't land until January, but I am expecting it to sound great for almost any style of music I play.

Dual Coils with exposed magnets (but I'm sure Singlecoils would sound great too) | I wouldn't call walnut punchy and growly. My walnut Emperor is more like refined and slightly compressed. Ash is probably more along the lines of what you're looking for. My mahogany Viceroy is a little more throaty and barky.
