They were good instruments. MIJ, pretty much just a standard bass with a faux printed flame pattern applied to the wood so they looked fancy.

I've seen a lot of them f/s with the "faux" finish cracked. Usually looks pretty bad, much worse than a finish crack in a regularly finished instrument. Nice looking without flaws, though. The rest of the bass is typical MIJ quality: pretty good.

I used one as my primary bass for years, got stolen unfortunately. Great sound and feel, I never had any problems with the finish on mine.

I have one from '94.

Basically it's a '62 P with this faux finish.

It was my first Fender. I'm currently going to refinish it.

Here it is (before):

The Jazzes are good basses, except for the aforementioned finish cracks and that they tended to be heavy. The really good ones have two hamburglars on the neck.

So even the back of the neck is foto flame?

I never dug these things. A really gaudy attempt at dressing mutton as lamb. Sort of the 79Cutlass Supreme on big rims mentality. You are paying slightly more for an instrument with a bit of photocopied wood stuck on it that is then half obscured by some eye-jarring burst.

Those J and P basses are cool because they have that no-nonsense vibe with the Dupont colours etc... not these fancy deals.

The natural finish fotoflame bodies are much more subdued.

I had a fotoflame Strat. Major cracks in the finish. More like fractures. Big air bubble under the "foto" on the back of the headstock as well. That being said, it played and sounded fine.

Found a story online. It said the guy who did the Hamburglar on the neck as a joke was fired for that.

I picked up one on CL that was so bad, it was ugly. I got it for dirt cheap because no one would buy it. Stripped it down and gave it a nice refinish. I ended up with a nice MIJ Fender P for under $250.

Yeah, these were decent instruments when they came out. The fotoflame for the record isn't a photocopy. Its a transparent film that's applied between wood and finish, its done well and looks pretty realistic and three dimensional.

I have a MIM Jazz from 2004 or 05 that I bought of ebay. It has a flamed top. Would this be a photo finish? No biggie if it is, I just cant see them putting a flamed top on an MIM.

Anyway, here's a pic:

Nope. Too late to be a fotoflame. They were gone by about 1998 or so.
