I have to say, I'm not impressed with these "Frankenbasses". These don't look like Frankenbasses they look like expensive basses with very small modifications. Check out this Frankenbass. This is what Im talking about. It was originally a home project Precision bass. I took a pickup from a squire vintage modified jazz bass and routed a space for it with a steak knife. Same with the second volume knob and pickup selector. The bridge poles are long gone, so the saddles are being held up by a folded up rotosound packet. I'll be doing something similiar to my mustang bass as well.

MiM Fender neck
Squier body
SD Quarter Pounder pickup
Hipshot A-style bridge
Tonestyler tone control
Strung with Rotosound Swing, Nickel, .045-.105
Aside from the tonestyler, configuration is conventional.
Almost everything bought in the TB classifieds.
Probably adding a Hipshot detuner soon, and I'm contemplating making it a dual-P.
MiM Fender neck
Squier body (originally Shoreline Gold, repainted w/ rattle can, and professionally clearcoated)
Dimarzio Model P/J pickups
Hipshot A-style bridge
Hipshot d-tuner
Strung with D’Addario Chromes (flats), .050-.105
Wired V/B/T, with the blend set up to be unloaded. Switches are Series/parallel for each pickup.

Started out as an Ampeg Little Stud, then I coverted it to 8-string. Now it's a plain old 4-string Frankenbass.
Cheap plywood body - check
No name neck w/ no name tuners - check
Old school EMG pickup - check
No name bridge - check |

Removing the polepieces made the whole thing much louder for some reason. Installed four Schaller tuning machines and a 5-string Schaller bridge schimmed with 4 butter knife blades. Strung with D'Addario 105-50. |

first up is my jazz bass.
mij fender body, black, all original, as far as i can tell
USACG birdseye maple neck, im not sure what the fretboard is, its very tight grain, its definitely not rosewood, i doubt its pau ferro, it may be ebony, 21 frets, fretwire doesnt appear to be steel, the frets are small, or "vintage" style, which is my favorite. side position markers only.
hip shot ultra light tuners
badass II
mint green all parts pick guard
control plate, harness, knobs from a mim fender jazz
black dimarzio model j middle pickup
creme dimarzio model j middle pickup, in the bridge position
black dunlop straplocks
ernie ball hybrid slinkys
next up is my recently completed p bass.
mim fender body, black base coat, royal blue medium metal flake finish
warmoth maple neck, pau ferro fretboard, 21 frets
schaller vintage style tuners
all parts mint green pick guard
black dimarzio model p pickup
chrome squier classic vibe high mass bridge
squier vintage modified tone circuit
both knobs are gold top hat "tone" knobs from a gibson les paul
black dunlop strap locks
ernie ball hybrid slinkys
both basses are great players, and sound fantastic. the jazz is my work horse. ive never owned a better bass. i just finished the p bass over the weekend, so i have yet to really put it through the paces. i imagine itll see quite a bit of live duty this summer.

It's an older SX fretless. It used to be Agave Blue, but I stripped it and gave it a (crappy) flat black paint job. Pulled all the electronics and wired in some Bassline 1/4 J pups. Schaller tuners, BA II bridge, Warmoth hardware.
I intended to black it all out, but the pick guard didn't fit and the paint job was crappy so I just left it off. Gives it some character, I guess...
I don't really play fretless so I think I'm going to try and find a MIM J body and P neck to plug all that hardware/electronics in to.

The pickups are rewound in Indiana. |
The rewound pickups are now placed on the Dynacord hollowbody on the left. It also needed a truss rod replacement and some re-glueing of body parts and binding.
The fretless is modded by replacing the J bridge pickup for a DiMarzio G humbucker. I gave the pickup a black cover to keep something of it's previous appearance. The back-cover for the electronics is replaced by a piece of rosewood and I drew and made the pickguard + another truss rod cover.
(a screw broke off, so i decided to make a new truss-rodcover that was slightly higher)
It now has a Gotoh bridge and CTS pots.
The Ibanez EB3 has replaced tuners, an Artec sidewinder, allparts mini-bridge humbucker, Schaller 460 bridge, Gibson & DiMarzio pots & an allparts SG switch. (There's still some work to be done on a buzz in the Artec)

24 Fret, rosewood fretboard, black pearl inlays, ash body, black hardware, Fujigen Mighty Jazz Pickups, custom fade, 1 piece maple neck, black headstock with abalone inlay.
I may be having a 5 built in the next year or so, or a fretless... still deciding. Also considering putting some antiquity II pickups in, but haven't had enough time playing it through my rig to decide yet. |
