This bass has very low action and was simply sounding like magic at last Sunday's gig. I just need to stay focused and keep a light touch.

custom stainless pickup ring (not shown)
custom stainless control plate
re-routed body for a mudbucker
added bridge cover
want to replace the bridge and tuners

Highway One body, '71 Fender neck, Aguilar pups, vintage-style bridge and TI's. It totally cops the Floyd Money tone.
I hope my '74 project comes out this good!

Pickguard to proper(ish) early seventies, flat black tug bar without those ugly sharp edges, bridge cover hiding the vintage grooved-saddle bridge that I prefer.
Not in the picture but I love the 71 neck plate too. Something cool about seeing that serial number with the '71 neck. Yes, I am weird!
That's all.

Had been stripped and stained in a streaky/dirty/andjustplainicky style. The logo was gone and a hand-drawn logo with some custom wording added.
It came out great but the decal is not quite right for the '74. The flying F is a little narrow compared to my other 70's basses.
Anyhoo, here is a pic or two.

... | Excellent!!!
I wish I bought a P Bass in Walnut/Rosewood back in '74. I "had' to have Natural/Maple. The neck was awful, it was never right, but I was a noob (at age 15) and didn't press for a warranty replacement. I did keep the thing until '89 though.

I have never seen a 70's neck as nice as this one. It was a hideous mess when I got it but it fits this '74 body like it was made for it. The maple neck I took off (also a '74) fit more like what I am used to seeing from the "typical 70's" basses. Really had to manage the gaps and keep it aligned so the strings were centered. Not the worst I've seen but not like this new neck. I am very pleased with this new one. Quote:

Like the wood(?) rest. I had a brass nut on the '74 on the maple neck. Something cool (to me) about the 70's and brass nuts. Not a big fan of them for any other reason than I just think they are cool on the '70's basses.

This is an '81 alder Fender body and '09 Fender Highway One neck which I bought here on TB.
The bridge is a vintage Badass. The rest, CTS pots, 1950's Sprague cab (from Curtis), Curtis Novak custom wound 60's style pickups, Jeannie custom pickgaurd and Hipshot Ultralight tuners. It plays and sounds great. The pickup spacing is copied from another bass like this which I was trying to replicate. I've been putting a Sadowsky pedal preamp in front of it when playing. I intended to make this an active bass but decided the Sadowsky pedal would be a nice option. The routing, tuner, wiring and setup were done by me. It sounds like J should. The tone control is simple and totally useful. |
