Fretless neck problem help
Hello, I have a carvin b5f (fretless) bass
i recently noticed that the neck has a little forward bow and i don't know a lot about neck adjustment nor do I have any shops here where I can take this bass
I tried to tighten the neck a little bit every day (since neck adjustment takes time), using the allen wrench clockwise , it doesn't work
here is a picture
I'm not sure if you can see the problem but help me out from what you understand
picture link if it doesn't show https://www.dropbox.com/s/fuhx93jz7k...214_081359.jpg
This looks too straight to me.
Neck adjustements are immediate.
I read otherwise here
and too straight? is that a problem? what should I do to fix it?
Is it noting out?
Is it buzzing...even for a fretless?
WHat's the problem?
the first 1-2 frets are really close to the neck so it doesn't hold a note like on other frets and when I hold first few frets, it makes a crunch sound as soon my hand leaves the fret after playing the note (i wouldn't call it buzzing but maybe that's what fretless buzz is)
Yep, neck too straight. You need to give more relief, not less. You need to untighten the trussrod.
What happens here is that when you fret on first notes, the body of the string vibrates against the wood around 12th fret because it doesn't have enough room.
The neck has to be curved to work. Vibrating strings are curved, not straight.
I agree on taking it slow to give the wood a chance to react. I agree, that it's a LITTLE too straight, but not by much. Some very helpful tips at:
Honestly, this is a legend. Trussrods make necks move right away and even very old ones don't need time to adjust, fortunately for luthiers who'd need 2 days to do a setup.
Ease the tension on the truss rod about 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn at a time…take it slow in small increments and see if this fixes the problem.
Okay, I tried to ease the tension gradually but I have no idea if it's working
Can you tell if it's working, this is the most recent picture
I still think I need to tighten the truss rod, since the bow seems forward near first fret, can someone explain that to me?
It's hard to say for sure from just a picture, but I think I'd go slightly straighter and raise the bridge touch.
