How much were you expecting? $100 doesn't sound too crazy. You'd get more selling it yourself.

Don't they cost $300 new? If so that is completely appropriate.

I've read on some thread that someone who personally knew a GC employee that they pay half of what they'll sell it for. So a hundred bucks with a hard case is low I suppose. Put it in the classifieds. Ratings for buyers and keeping basses in the bass players community is the way to go.

Generally they pay 60% of what they can sell it for.

I'm surprised more people don't really think about this stuff before trying to trade in at a store.

Agreed... trades are always a tricky subject. People expect to get the most money back for their purchase, and that is just not the reality of it. You generally can get half of what the piece is SELLING for used. Unless you scored the piece at a pawn shop, or found it in an attic somewhere, expect to loose money.

GC can be used for your advantage to... let them research a reasonable used value. Multiply whatever they tell you times 2 and list on CL. If someone asks me what their gear is worth and I'm not very familiar with the value, this is usually the advice I give.

Yeah, for the most part you MUST remember that GC (or any other retailer) has to make a profit on their purchases. A "profit" is 100% of what they buy it for.

Taking into account what they sell for new - their offer is more than reasonable (for them) and probably NOT what you were looking for.

That's why it is usually a good idea to cut out the "middle man" and sell it yourself. YOU take the profit and NOT GC.

Good Luck!!

I'm curious. If this is what you think that it is worth used, what did you expect GC to offer you in trade?

GC is quick and dirty. you will get less then doing the work to try to sell it yourself. if you sell it on TB you might get more but more foot work in selling it. They are in business to make money like everyone.

Do not trade in! The store always gets the better deal! Sell it yourself. How many time does this have to be said? In defense of the store they are not ripping you off they have to double their money, it's just business.

If I was the GC manager, I'd have offered $50

They wanted to pay me $300 for my brand new Marcus Miller as a trade in. Wasn't even a month old, mint, no marks, no scratches. I heard that offered and "headed for the hillz!!"

There are times where GC offered me very little and other times I made out very well. Being informed of current market values (sold items on eBay and selling prices here) is the best thing to do.

I have yet to see a GC, pawn shop or other retailer look at my stuff and bump up the offer because a case was involved. Case = $0 to the trade in offer IME.

GC wouldn't be in business if they couldn't show a profit. Sounds like a standard trade in deal. You'd probably not get any better offer at a mom and pop shop.
