The sidewinders are hum-buckers...a meter doesn't tell you that Your pot(s) might be bad...happened on my grabber. Replaced them and it's dead quiet.

G3 was introduced in 75, so if it has a 74 date code it's probably one of the earliest. Looking forward to seeing pics.

Well, just picked up a fretless 75 Tobacco Burst Ripper on ebay! So now I have fretted and fretless of the same bass.... life is complete. This one has some serious fingerboard issues... but I imagine it can be fixed. The seller was either dishonest about the condition, or was simply too stupid to know there was a problem. I guess in fairness, I'll choose the latter. But, in spite of the neck pickup not working properly...the body is in good shape, it's light, and has great tone on the notes that play well. It'll be a project, but well worth it. Here's a pic of the twins.

Sweet basses Ed.
What do you find the are tonal/ playing differences between the ripper & G3?
I've just one '77 wine red G3 that has Labella Tapes on & is a great bass, I love her.

I have only played a G3 once, many years ago. I liked it, but can't remember it well enough to say.

Here she is. A 1976 Gibson Ripper In Ebony.

She spent two weeks in a UPS facility due to Hurricane Sandy making my area unbearable to travel to.

More and better pictures to follow sooner than later!

Me being a HUGE Nirvana fan has greatly contributed to me acquiring this
