Anyone know how this bass compares with the mid-90's Gibson Les Paul Standard bass (the one with Active Barts)? I used to own one of these and it was amazing (really regret selling it). Is the body on the new "oversized" model larger than the LPB from the 90's? How is the sound compared with the older model?

Thanks,
Tom
Much bigger body on the Oversized and the Oversized 4 had much wider spacing than my '90s active 5er. Sound wise? The Oversized is passive but crazy high output. Was louder than my active 5.

Both are nice basses!

my concern (well, my main concern is that it is made by gibson ) is that the pickups are very close together, and they might not have individual unique tones. anyone have opinions on this?

The first thing I noticed on the oversized Les Paul was the tilt back neck(like the guitar). Huge plus. I'll have to check one out.

Last week I pulled the trigger on a goldtop oversized LPB.

I have to agree with what someone else wrote about this bass. It is truly a work of art! She is a beauty. As far as play-ability is concerned - the action and intonation were perfect right out of the box. The neck is substantial while not feeling too chunky (though granted, I have good sized hands).

While the TB-plus pickups are a bit anemic compared with my LPB from the early 90's (the model that came with Bartolini pickups and pre's), it still cooks! A surprising number of tones can be had from this bass - from classic rock to country to modern/hard rock.

The body is a bit large, but I'm already getting used to it.

My only beef is not concerning the bass - it's actually with the Gibson OHSC. There are multiple glue spots inside (connecting the plush fabric with the vinyl) and it's pulling in some areas. If it wasn't such a hassle I would return it for a replacement. BTW, the case was made in Canada. Those flappin'-headed Canucks!

If you're interested, get them while they're still around as Gibson has discontinued this model.

My biggest issue was the weight. Mine was a beast.

Loved the tone though.... And mine was by far the loudest passive bass I have ever played.

$1325 is "marked down considerably?" did I miss something?

I have the exact same bass. You should try one if you can.
Love the neck profile, and the P/Us are fantastic. This bass is a real boomer.
The only thing I can say negative about it is that the neck really needs to be tweaked more than my other basses.
Really moves with the change of seasons.
The other thing is the fretwork..... Not the greatest.

Ill never sell her though. Shes a keeper

Are the current 2013 LP basses still the oversized version or are they back to regular size?

Size comparison pic?

Hello all. Long time reader of this forum here. Hoping for a little help narrowing down which les Paul bass to get.

Anyone know of any pics with the oversized les Paul bass next to a "regular" les Paul bass? Thinking about grabbing one of these. Also is the body on the regular les Paul bass the same as the body on the les Paul guitar?

Thanks.

I wish something like this was still made...if it had a SOLID B string, I'd jump on one.

Actually, I find the B string very solid on this bass, may have to do with the Warwick bridge setup. It's very tight.

Mine will be here tomorrow. I got the last new Goldtop they had in stock for $1250 shipped! I'll use it for our shows this weekend. I'll upload pics, and give you guys a full on opinion of how these things play and feel on the job.

I know this is a Gibson thread, but that Les Paul bass with the gold top inspired me to post pics of a bass I have that looks similar:

Early 90's to 2007 Les Paul Standard Basses are better than the current ones IMHO.
There's a nice 05' Honeyburst LPB3 in the classifieds.

I've played them, and they sounded great. They could just never get me to the buying point with the smaller guitar bodies. It just looked awkward, so when I saw that they were making oversize bodies, they had me sold. I'm also not at all a fan of putting Bartolinis in a Les Paul, which most of their earlier models had. There's something just not right about that to me. Putting the high output TB+ pups in there was the best choice they could've made.

I like this bass, a lot....and it is a good thing that it looks exactly like a les paul guitar. You know, some people like classic looking basses. This one is beautiful, and I especially like the trapeziod inlays and binding on the neck and body....makes the bass look really classier. And I like the chrome. Hate those plastic pups on T-birds, they just don't look as cool as chrome. To all people saying Gibson basses suck, buy yourself something you like and shut the **** up.....we don't care. This bass seems to be perfect for classic rock. I hope one day I will have opportunity to play it, or to have it.

Peace and love. ))

They used the TB+ pickups in all the LPB3 basses with the toggle. The warwick bridges were better than the Gibson made tune-o-matics the new ones have. Almost as bad a bridge as the much loved 3 point Gibson refuses to let die.

I knew the LPB3's had TB+, but the large production run models (especially in the 90's and early 00's) were mostly equipped with active Bartolinis. I would definitely agree with the adoration for those Warwick bridges. I feel like they added a lot to LP basses tonally, but I think you're wrong about the new Tunomatic bridges. I've played on these new ones, and Gibson has done a great job of adapting their Tunomatic Guitar bridge system (which I'm a huge fan of) into something efficient and innovative for bass. And I have to tell you, they sound really damn good. With all the new chambering, the sustain is just right, and the action is just in my sweet spot.
