Gibson midtown or other bass to use the hipshot super tone bridge. Thoughts
Hey guys just got a gibson midtown bass and I love it. I do however like to adjust individual string heights. I have been thinking about getting the hipshot bridge. Was wondering what your thoughts are on the bridge. Also a real pic of it on a bass to see if I will like the look. I has searched the web and can not find a pic of the midtown with the hipshot. Thanks guys

I don't have a Midtown but I have a Hipshot on my Thunderbird as a replacement for the same Gibson style bridge. The Hipshot is WAY better than the standard one. The bass stays in tune longer, I can get a lower action than I could with the old one, and it increased the low end response so much that I had to learn how to play with a lighter tough (although I'm not sure if that last one will apply to a hollowbody bass). Also it doesn't fall apart when you take the strings off. Get it, and if you don't like it or it doesn't work like you want it to then you can sell it.

I love it on my Explorer, but I recently had to glue the screw posts back into the body because they were pulling out...not sure how that works on a hollowbody though...
that aside, it changed the bass into something I can easily play at every gig.

fwiw, I have a couple of basses with the 3 point bridge and don't have any trouble with them. search the forum for 'setting up a 3 point bridge'. it's a lot eaiser than most people think.

I have a Gibson SG Standard bass and installed the Hipshot bridge, and it's great! Going to put one on my Gibson Thunderbird in the near future.

Here you go EasyE...
I put one on mine when I first got it because I had one laying around. It gives it a little brighter tone, other than that I did not notice any other sonic differences. It's easier to adjust, and the saddles don't come popping off when you're not careful taking off the strings. I ended up putting the old bridge back on with a modbar on it.

Nice bridge that allows string spacing adjustment also.

Here's the original bridge that came with the bass
and the hipshot
I had to install a shim under it initially but I've since routed the neck pocket flat and now everything is lower and better. I also drilled holes and added screws at the back to keep the back end from rising under string tension.
It's a great improvement over the original.

I've owned a bunch of gibson basses, I've never had any issues with the 3pt bridge, once set up they are stable and look clean.
I tried the hip shot once, hated it.. Looks ugly, made no positive tone changes (slightly thinner sound maybe).. Yeah.. Not a fan.
