I stopped by an out-of-town Guitar Center tonight and they had a new '50 CV on the wall priced at just $249.99 US. It played like a dream!!! If I wasn't living in 5-string land almost exclusively these days, I'd probably be holding it right now.

And I've played a few '60s CVs that were awesome too.

Agreed, one of either the classic vibe or vintage modified Squier line.

Or a Squier P with a PJ setup is the nuts. I'm partial to Korean & Japanese Squiers myself but the new ones are great. Remember to play them first; don't get carried away by what you see on the www.

For the money, I honestly believe you can't go wrong with any of the basses linked in the OP. I'm one of those guys who can afford the "real" Fenders, but I don't see any reason to spend that kinda money when we have these Squiers to choose from.

As far as VM vs. CV, I think you're just choosing between the satin necks on the VMs or the glossy necks on the CVs - and only you know which feels better to you. I like the glossy, so I'm a CV guy all the way.

You can see three CV's in my avatar to the left. All three of them put together cost me considerably less than one new MIA Fender - which I think these compare to incredibly well. The Freeman is my #1 gigging bass and I can't say enough good about it - got it used for $200 on CL.

You have a wonderful dilemma in front of you. Just get to the store and play every one you can get your hands on and one of them will speak to you more than the others.

Bass Whisperer has some good videos on youtube with the cv stuff a/b'd to his vintage stuff. The pbasses sound great.

This. I have played some very nice CV and VMs, and they're value city, but for my money...I like the versatility of a PJ setup. I've found some very serviceable Precision Specials on my local CL for under two hundred bucks.

I agree these are all nice instruments.

I also agree the P/J adds some versatility. As you decide, please take a look at the Modern Player Jaguar. It's a very nice instrument and definitely has some of the best aspects of the CV line going for it.

Just a super instrument at a very reasonable price. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-M...53-i2013857.gc

Best of luck!

Bob

I have the 50s and 60s CVs. The 50s has a chunky neck and a beefy tone. It's quite vesratile; not lot of midrange, but lots of deep reggae bottom or brighter rock crunch. You can slap it. The 60s is smoother all around; it has a narrow jazz bass neck and warm, punchy bass tones (though the G string is quite weak). Different beasts. I like them both. I never modded them, though I thought about it. I just put Rotosounds on them and they sound good.

Thank you so much so far guys! I'm most probably go for either the 50's or 60's CV (unless I get to try it and don't like the glossy neck, or anything else).

The biggest problem with me, and it is the reason why I felt I need to ask for your advice is that there are very few music stores near me. And the ones I find don't have all the squiers I wish they had... The only VM/CV both P and J that I ever found in a store was the 70's VM-J that I ended up buying.

So this time I'm probably gonna have to order the CV... maybe I can ask the store if they can bring one and if I don't like it I don't have to buy.

I came within inches of buying a CV '60s - the sound was superb and it was a delight to play. Unfortunately I believe the only option on finish was "Fiesta Red" - or "pink," as it's known to the rest of us.

Hmm... Am I the only one who wouldn't bother having a fiesta red bass?

Tried a CV 50s in my LMS... superb.

Sonic blue CV 60s is very nice if you can find one.

Although the Squier website only shows 50's in butterscotch and the 60's in fiesta red, a website of a store in my reach has them both listed in blue! I'm not sure if they can even order in that colour, maybe the online pictures aren't updated in a while.

I'm with you J - not a fan at all of the fiesta red or the sonic blue for that matter. Everyone else seems to like the blue though, so when I get around to selling it, I don't expect to have much trouble. It sounds so freakin' great that I just can't let go of it yet.

Please stop, you're torturing me
I guess the dilemma/not being sure situation was holding my GAS but now that I'm convinced I can't wait to try it out and ultimately bring it home!

The 60's doesn't have a jazz neck. It has a p bass neck. Just a little slimmer front to back maybe but it's still p bass nut width.
