| | | | I never had any philosophical issues regarding pick-playing. I play finger-style on bass almost exclusively, mainly because I stink when I play with a pick, just like I do when I play guitar. :-)
I don't gig nowadays, but I occasionally break out the pick to see if I can get better. On certain songs, either for tone or speed, it can come in handy.
I hardly slap at all, because I'm even worse at that than I am with a pick, which distresses me because I'd love to be able to do it well.

| | All bass, no talent! Me endorsed? | | Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada | | | I only use a pick for cover songs that require it. It is hard for me though.... I play a bit of guitar (and have for 30+ years) but on bass my hand cramps up!
As an aside, my guitard gave me a bunch of bass related stuff for Christmas including a couple of felt picks....
Does anyone actually use felt Picks? If so, for what tunes/music styles?

I now really wish I could play better with a pick. Pbass + flats + pick is a great tone. For me, fast and technical stuff is much easier to play with fingers.

Why is it that this statement lives on today?
A pick is nothing more than a tool you can use to get a different tone, feel, play speed, and most importantly, attack. And lets be honest, you are still using your fingers when you fret.. and to grip the pick. Open your mind to the fact that it is simply a way to get a different tone. Stop thinking so narrowly about your own instrument.

| | | | When I was much younger and gigging 5 nights a week, I never ever played with a pick until my band decided to cover "Whipping Post" (the beginning's damn near impossible without one).
Now, though, since about 99% of my bass playing is in the studio, it's almost always a pick. My time is better, articulation and muting are both cleaner, and calluses (or the lack of them) aren't an issue. |

When I joined my first band, they were a punk band. I had a P-bass and a pick, and all was good. But we were just opening for the New Wave bands, and those guys all had active Yamaha or Ibanez basses, and played fingerstyle. I wanted to be in a headliner band, so I figured that was the way I needed to play. I also got a Roadstar 850.

Well.. And I joined another technical metal band. Their songs are insaaanely fast, so I literally have to use a pick. I am working on my three finger technique but it's not quite there yet. I do love the tone of the pick though and yes, I'm a guitarist turned bassist (but love the bass way more than I loved the guitar!)
Love the maturity in here.

I agree with the TB'ers who say using a pick versus fingers depends on what the song calls for.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Nov 2003 Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada eh? | | I can't play guitar because of a physical impairment. I can play bass however and have always used a pick. I started taking bass lessons when I was 8. The instructor couldn't teach me finger style as he was a guitar player and was teaching me out of a book. I'm now 47 and have my pick technique down to a science. My technique involves angling the pick slightly and using more of the side of the pick as opposed to having it parallel with the string and using just the tip. This picking style and some intricate right hand muting seems to give me more of a finger sound.
Any auditions that I have gone to where someone in the band comments on the fact that I don't use fingers, the subject never comes up again after I play the first song.
I have always been a very aggressive player so using a pick suits me just fine.
