I was never very proficient at it, but I started listening to a lot of Allman Brothers, and love Berry's playing, so I decided to learn the songs using a pick. Really did wonders for my proficiency (plus I now know the entire first two Allman albums, excluding Dreams, which I haven't quite mastered). I'm not really sure where the stigma stems from, so many of the early pioneers of bass used picks: Entwistle, Casady, Oakley, JPJ (on occasion), Chris Squire, Carol Kaye, Macca, the list goes on and on. I've really grown to love playing with a pick, and alternate regularly, even during the same song.
Seriously, the sound of a P-bass strung with Rounds into a Sunn 2000s is like nothing else. Massive and crunchy. Crunch crunch crunch.

I play pick and fingers depending on the song needs. Mix it up during sets. Enjoy one as much as another. My P bass through my mesa walkabout with a hint of sans amp BDDI, strung with fresh rounds, is my favorite precision tone. Favorite pick player is Bruce Foxton. Dig into some of Big Country's albums to hear some great pick playing by Tony Butler too. |

Just kidding.
I agree though that it does add something to each note. Hard to really qualify what that is but I like it. Quote:

I can actually play just about equally efficiently with either fingers or pick but I've noticed that as I get older, and fingers begin to stiffen up, that I prefer the pick....
Sucks to get old.......

As to having the hate include tonal remarks? You can get any tone you want when you are proficient with pick technique and know your equipment and tone shaping capabilities. Please do not hate someone because YOU think they are limiting themselves. Just maybe they are perfectly happy with the pick and playing extremely well and making a living better than you or I will ever make. In fact, the word "hate" has no place in any of this. Its a very strong word that should be applied to a lot more serious things than someone's choice of playing technique. | read the passage that you quoted of me |

Sucks to get old....... | Same boat here. Takes a while to get good picking down. I think the key to good pick playing is being able to control the open string ringing with the edge of your palm doing some muting near the bridge. At least that works for me.
