Question hanging your basses on the wall?

I couldn't figure out the best place to ask this... so I've guessed this is the best spot.

I'd love to get a few of those wall mounts to hang my basses... similar to what you see in the Guitar Center type stores. They would be easily accessed and yet out of the reach of little kiddos.

However, I'm just a little concerned about suspending my one-of-a-kind instruments from a few screws on the wall.

Anyone here have any experience either good or bad with these wall mounts? thanks.

I've got a couple of them. Screw them into a stud and you'll be fine.

I was advised against it due to the weight of the body constantly pulling on the neck. I just keep mine on 2 racks, no probs at all. Plus my wife wouldn't like having 10 basses hanging on the wall ;-)

I've got two I scored on eBay for around $20. Never had any issues or felt like they were going to fall off.

I hadn't thought about this... good point. My bass is pretty light... my stratocaster is heavier than my bass but still this is a good thought.

I have several....as stated earlier MKAE SURE YOU GET A STUD...

I had one fall off (only one screw was into wood)...luckily the strap button was the only area of damage and was earliy fixed (WHEW!)

NOW, I mounted a piece of oak on the wall.

it is a 1" x 6". the wood is screwed into several studs. i then screwed the mounts into the wood and no issues!

here is a pic of about 1/2 of the length (note: not all basses shown still owned!)

Agree ^^^^^^^^^^^

Also,(cant tell where you're located) if you live in California or another earthquake-ravaged region, consider getting the Hercules-type hooks which lock the neck.

Had a vintage J fly off the wall during our last quake. Fortunately there was carpeting, and the bass survived *whew!* I then got the Hercules hooks. Cant wait for the next quake!!

I'll mention another thing. If your instruments are in the basement (mine are), hanging them on the wall ensures that they won't get damaged in a sewer backup or flood.

No thanks...give me bags and a cupboard any day of the week! 1) they'll need more cleaning and 2) ...do you trust ANYONE who comes by your house enough to keep their noses out and not nick that one-of-a-kind £5000 Ritter you've got hanging in the living room or studio that they've seen every time they've walked past?

I started one of those earlier threads mentioned.

Mine are hung with the Hercules GSP39WB hangers, which have a base plate that uses 3 screws to hold it to the wall (as opposed to the ones that have a faux wood base and only 2 screws hold it to the wall).

I hung them on drywall without going into any studs. I used Toggler SnapSkru SP drywall anchors (got 'em at Lowes). They're rated for 79 pounds each. I figure with 3 of those holding up each bass, I'm not too worried about them falling off the wall (he says as he runs to check on them ).

Just my $.01 cents worth (I'm too poor to give $.02).

YMMV
Wisdom? I don't know. But I do know that I like it better as decoration than any pictures/paintings I've ever seen that could be hanging there instead. And my girlfriend loves the look. She's the one that actually suggested it.

And as far as affecting the necks, the only things I've heard about affecting bass necks by hanging them is at least 2 that I know of that had necks that had gotten bowed to the point that the truss rod would only get them to a decent setup (actually, one had a graphite neck with no truss rod), but not great. Leaving them hanging for 6 months to a year "fixed" both of the basses in question.

I don't see how leaving one hanging up could actually hurt it (other than if it falls off the wall).

I would like to know if it is bad for the neck, then why does every guitar shop and museum hang amazingly expensive one of a kind guitars and basses on the wall. Everywhere does it, everywhere. I had this arguement with my brother because he keeps his in cases and I hang mine. I don't think it matters as long as the hangers are hung right and sturdy. I love the extra room I now have in my office because everythings not on stands taking up floor space. Plus it looks awesome.

Exactly! And I KNOW there are some REALLY expensive basses that stay hung up by the neck (for example, at Atlanta Bass Gallery) for MONTHS before somebody comes along and buys them.

Stringswing.com has the rails and hangers. The hangers can often be found real cheap on eBay. We have three eight foot rails worth of guitars, basses and whatnot. No issues.
