Hey guys Ive been a drummer my whole life and I just recently decided I wanted to pick up learning the bass guitar.
I guess I really just wanted help picking out my first bass, and trying to find this specific tone.
Anyways, I really want to be able to emulate this sound, whether live or recorded :

Currently Im looking at the Squire Modified Jazz bass 5 string, and the ESP LTD B205sm 5-string. I know the ESP is much better suited for metal, but it just looks so damn awesome!
Would a P & J bass be better suited for this sort of tone? (I realize he probably did post production work to the sound, but still...)

I also purchased a Hartke Attack bass preamp to help boost and shape my sound.
Any ideas for a good sub $400 bass that can get damn near that tone in the video?
Note: I will mostly be using this for recording purposes, so lets pretend an amp is out of the equation. When I will be using an amp, it will be my band-mates.
