Real MIM, black label Fender, I bet my bottom dollar that neck shreds as good as an American, I had a black label P and the little bit of research I found is that some black label MIM Fenders had MIA necks, don't know if it is true or not, lots of info is sketchy and hard to find, folk lore type stuff, like the ole Fender fire story. (there was a fire at the Encenada plant so they finished a bunch of MIM stuff in America) My black label P had an unbelievable neck, I had never seen such as nice neck on a MIM, also had a nice little bit of flame to the back so it looked killer. Sold it to a friend who has it as his #1 amongst a handful of others.

More pics please, let us see the rest of it, otherwise who knows if you even do have the bass in question.

As far as I'm aware, they're real MIMs but with cheaper electronics.

There were two different versions of these black labels ... one was considered the Traditional series/version, and were considered be using a better grade component than the other version ... yours may have changed several times over, but the pickguard on the Traditional version stock from the factory was a multi-ply, and the other was a single ply .. certainly nothing reliable to ID yours, as its easily changed ... perhaps the more important question, is do YOU like it ... because not much else matters unless you intend to flip it ... JMHO

Edit to add: .. I forgot to answer your question ... the answer is yes to either question .. yes it is a MIM Fender, and yes it is a Squier ... BTW, it does have the one piece pickguard, correct?

The two black label Fenders (the Traditional series and the Squier series) were technically MIM, and the necks and bodies on the Traditionals were MIA then assembled in mexico. the Squier series were most likely made out of MIA necks and bodies too, but not much info on them. They had mexican electronics and east asian hardware. The Squier series were legitimate Fenders, look at it like squier SERIES, not SQUIER.

Fender -Squier Series MIM or Squier by Fender MIJ, MII, MIC, OR MIK; what's the diff? Little. It's a good bass or its not, bottom line.

Edit: what I'm saying is the only "Real Fender's" are those made before Leo left Fender behind. So an MIC Squier by Fender is as much a Fender as anything else made that year; a product of the same corporation. Proof is that it used to be that if it wasn't MIA, it carried a 'series' designation. Now, by the magical declaration of FMIC board of directors, at the urging of the vp of marketing, an MIM now qualifies as a full fledged Fender; regardless that they may or may not use the same hardware. Marketing. Just like the Squier website was closed and all products were moved to the Fender site. Marketing.

I think you pretty much got what is available on these ... that link Puscifer directed you to is out on several other threads that the Black Labels have come up for discussion on ... if you have searched, you know what is out there ... Fender customer service even has nothing more to share, in fact the fella that I talked to about them several years ago, was asking me questions ..

BTW, as I mentioned earlier, the single ply p/g on yours more than likely denotes the less expensive version ... those that were changing them and were 'in the know', were either switching to a multi ply, a custom made, or the conventional control plate seperate p/g ... you will even find some of these out there for sale that people have removed (some not too well) the small Squier logo at the end of the headstock ...

Hmmm...

My black label MIM Jazz has an amazing neck too. Feels great plus some interesting birdseye action going on. It also sounds great plugged in or unplugged. Maybe there is something to this.

I have a Black Label with a beautiful foto- flame maple neck with a nice dark rosewood fingerboard. The neck has a great feel and very easy to play. Loved it so much, I went balls out on the mod. Changed everything except for the tuners (Licensed Schallers)
She now sounds AMAZING!!!
