Help me decide on a bass

Budget is about $600–700, and I'll be ordering new. I want something with a smooth sound, like smooth jazz, but also able to handle a good slap or metal sound. Basically artists like:

Rage Against the Machine
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Primus
Seether
Smooth jazz style music
And other rock/metal

Looking at a MIM Fender Jazz, but not entirely sure.

If you're looking at 4 strings, you really can't go wrong with a Fender Jazz. Great bass. You can find a good one in that price range. If you're looking at 5 strings, don't overlook Ibanez. They make some good stuff, though the soundgear necks are a bit thin for me.

I've been hearing good things about the vintage modified Squier, is it comparable to/better than the MIM Fender Jazz?

My friend, here on TB, everything is comparable!!

However, there are so many comparisons that after a while it will just confuse you, so, as many more will say in the near future...

Go try both and see which one you like more!!

(p.s: I have two Squier VM's and love them!)

1st there's a ton of good "used" basses in that price range - check out GC, MF, basscentral or CL. I picked up two of my last basses off the used list at MF and GC. Got a Fender CS '64 Jazz NOS at GC for $1,700. With all the goodies and case - looks brand new. Picked up a JCassady Silverburst $519 from MF in their used section they shipped it like it was new - perfect condition.

I know you say Jazz, but it sounds like you should look at the Flea basses. Go to his website. Otherwise there are a ton of used Jazz MIA in that price range out there.

Sadly I don't have access to any music shops to try any out, and I'm going to buy new.

It's pretty much between the VM Squier and the MIM Fender at this point.

Search the archives here for info on the CV Jazz. A bunch of us love these basses--I rank it up there with some US Fenders I've played and owned.

I've added (and nearly decided on) The Schecter Guitar Research Custom C-4, any word on that?

maybe a tribute L2000, they are really versatile and can easily go aggro for the harder stuff

I'll cast another vote for the Squier VM Jazz. Terrific bass for the $. They have won over legions of fans.

Sounds like you're pretty set on buying new, but considering that you don't really know what you're looking for, I'd check out the classifieds here on TB. You can get a WAY better bass in that price range if you buy used, and TB members tend to keep their instruments in new condition anyways! If you don't like it, you can flip it and not lose much.
