This guy has this listed on a local craigslist as a "Fender bass", says he really doesn't know anything about it and bought it used about ten years ago. To me, I'm pretty sure it's some kind of fake, but I want to check with the hive mind here.
Looks like a Peavey headstock to me, that someone stuck a Fender decal on? As to what model or year, I have no idea. Anyone care to venture a guess?
Not a Fender. Headstock looks like a re-decalled 90's "Stinger." Headstock implies a 70s bass. Not likely. Body looks like no Fender I've ever seen. It could be a good player.

Looks like a bass put together from parts of other basses to me. The body looks like a low end ibanez sound gear that's been refinished(painted) the headstock doesn't look like an ibanez though. Unless it was super cheap I wouldn't bother. If it is super cheap i would still ask to play it. You can buy fender decals online for next to nothing. I've seen a lot of people build fender copies and put fender decals on them. If you want to see for your self get on YouTube and search warmoth fender jazz assembly. The guy does a tutorial on how he puts the decal on lol
Good find Exploiter8 and StratHater, I didn't think to google the serial.
Looking at comparisons, I'm thinking an Ibanez body on it. As for the neck, who uses a retainer bar like that? I'm curious to see what the frankenstien is made of.

+1 It IS a Martin Stinger
