This bass looks like a cross between a Status and a Modulus, probably custom made with Steinberger or Status parts..

At 1:10 it clearly says Yamaha on the upper horn. Even with a crappy ultra low res screen shot it's fairly easy to deduce that it's a six letter word with three A's in the right places. It's clearly the same font Yamaha uses too. 
Whether it was a market specific small production run or prototype instrument or something scabbed together from various parts who knows? Considering the late '80's time frame either is plausible.

It might be a custom job. Louis Johnson owns a few custom basses from Yamaha he had built around that time although not headless.

Well I looked and there ain't nothin' out there I can find that's even close to conclusive. The two bolt headstock string retainer isn't anything that's familiar to me. It's definitely a Yamaha RBX body style but in an image search no RBX models of any sort turned up that had that writing on the upper horn. This makes me think it was a manufactured as a headless rather than a mod or frankenbass. It's common for manufacturers (Steinberger, Kubicki, Hohner, Status and even Yamaha on the BX series) to put their name on the body in the absence of a headstock and the only other Yamaha I could find that had a company name on the body was the headless BX.
My best guess is this bass was a short production run of a few pieces exclusively for the Japanese market that came and went unnoticed.

I find it interesting that the string clamp and bridge/tuners are totally different to that of the BX series basses. I like the BX hardware, and the mini headstock on the BX basses look much better than the cut-off headstocks of the Steinberger ilk.
